Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have master's degrees in both English and Education and have taught English for many years. I have prepared many students for SAT, ACT and AP English exams. In addition, I have graded AP exams for the College Board.

College Counseling

As a senior high English teacher, I have counseled my students on how to complete college applications, writing application essays, and completing resumes.
Over the last 20 years, all of my English students have been taught effective ways of answering the essay questions on college applications. In addition, I have completed hundreds of recommendation letters for students. I believe I am qualified for college counseling.

English

I have taught all levels of secondary English, including grades 6, 7, and 8. I have a Masters degree in English with expertise in English literature. I have also been approved as an Advanced Placement teacher in AP English Language and Composition by the College Board. My 24+ years as a high school teacher include a full curriculum - grammar, literature, composition and rhetoric.

Grammar

I have a Master's degree in English and have taught all levels of secondary English in the course of my 45+ years of classroom teaching. My expertise includes composition, rhetoric and grammar as well as literature.

Literature

As a retired English teacher, I have taught literature in grades 7 through 12. I have a Master's degree in English with concentration in literature and have been certified to teach both levels of Advanced Placement English. In addition, I have scored AP test essays for the College Board.

Public Speaking

I have taught theatre curriculum on the secondary level for 15 years. I have also worked in community theatre for several years as a performer as well as a director. As a workshop instructor for the Illinois Association of Student Councils I conducted leadership training and served as a workshop speaker for regional and state workshops.

Reading

I have Masters' degrees in both English and Education. I have taught all levels of secondary English which includes the study of literature and comprehension. In addition, I have done many hours of SAT and ACT prep which includes many strategies for reading comprehension.

SAT Reading

I am prepared to tutor for the new form of the SAT. There are many changes that make this new version much different from the old. If you are a junior or sophomore, you will be taking this new version.
The writing section, which is optional, is an argument analysis based on a reading passage. There is one writing section, and one reading section with multiple choice questions.

Study Skills

Good study skills are necessary for improving student performance. I have taught students how to manage their time effectively, write down assignments and prioritize them for best use of time. As an English teacher, I have taught students strategies to read critically, study vocabulary, and take good study notes for all subjects. Also preparing students for the SAT and ACT involved many study skills. I feel this qualifies me to tutor any student in how to study effectively.

Writing

I have taught AP Language and composition for several years and served as an AP reader for the College Board.

Exceptionally skilled, efficient, and personable

I was highly pleased with the service I received. Sharon quickly identified the areas that needed improvement and made useful suggestions. She is a competent tutor with exceptional intuition. I accomplished at least twice as much as I had planned during my lesson.
