Hello! I am a former Literacy Specialist who has decided to return to tutoring! I have been in education—including Higher Education—for a little under a decade, with years of literacy tutoring experience in the classroom. I have tutored elementary-aged students (PreK-5th grade) and predominately worked with students from 2nd-5th grade.
Tutoring sessions were conducted in small groups, ranging from 3-6 students at a time, but also included one-on-one. The focus and goal of these sessions was heavily on phonics, reading comprehension, grammar, and spelling. Typically, a lesson plan was utilized; but not always, depending on the student’s needs. A graphic organizer of some type was always used, whether it be a KWL, Venn Diagram, Bubble Map(s), or Mind Map(s).
I also have experience at the higher education level, where I have reviewed and graded scholarship essays. Not only do I have experience using APA and MLA formatting, but also a strong understanding applying the different formatting requirements.
All tutoring sessions should be focused on the students’ needs. Tutoring should be tailored to the student and concentrate on filling in the gaps or solidifying previously learned topics to create a stronger foundation to use moving forward.
