Hi! My name is James. In high school I was an AIME qualifier. I attended Cal State Fullerton University in California and majored in Mathematics. I ended up not completing my degree and instead worked full time as a tutor. This has been my career for over 15 years. I have worked for several entities before founding my own company due to demand and reputation. Rather than be authenticated by a University, I was authenticated by my audience and my students and became somewhat famous for my easy to understand explanations and passionate style of teaching.
I have built up a YouTube channel (TheBeautyofMath) to over 10,000 subscribers teaching American Mathematics Competitions Problems, and made such an impact in the math community that I was invited to give the keynote address at MIT for the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament.
During tutoring lessons, I have learned to perceive where each student is having difficulty and then I help them based on their unique personality types and level of perception. I can explain problems from multiple perspectives and I can match the level of the student very easily. Throughout my career I have consistently helped struggling students receive A's. I instill confidence in each student I work with, as I also do motivational speaking.
I utilize the Socratic Method when teaching, which means I will help guide the student through a series of questions that lead them to understand the process by which a problem is solved. It also allows me to identify blockages in understanding that a student may have so that I can better explain those underlying concepts to help the student grasp them. A key component of how I teach is that I don't just tell you what you should do, I help you understand why you should do it.
I have successfully tutored AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12, AIME, MathCounts, Math Kangaroo, PreAlgebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, PreCalculus, Calculus, SAT and GMAT.
