I graduated in 2010 with a BA in Liberal Studies from San Francisco State University. I was the first of my family to receive a College Degree, and my goal was to become an Educator. My portfolio includes working with youth for 25 years in multiple settings, servicing individual needs before and after school as a mentor, tutor and enrichment advisor. I understand first hand what it’s like as an English language learner who struggled through traditional schooling throughout my entire K-12 experience. This is my “why” for becoming an educator today.
For 3 years, I co-taught Culinary Arts as a CTE course for San Francisco High School youth, which included back of house and front of house servicing roles. Culinary Arts provides Science, Math, English and Communication, while also encompassing life skills such as time management, organization, team work, individuality and creativity. I conducted resume building and job interviewing workshops with my students, and placed students in job shadows/internships throughout the city of San Francisco.
I taught 4th grade during my first year here in Las Vegas, but have recently been teaching Middle School Science for the past 2 years. I also tutor individual students of mine in Science, Reading Comprehension and English Composition.
I use Jane Schaffer’s method combined with the productive struggle as a way to alter student perception towards obstacles in learning. I incorporate SEL techniques to gain student trust and build rapport, but also to get students comfortable with the idea of self expression, critical thinking and productive writing.
