My background has equipped me to work with a wide variety of students. I have a strong background in science and research, acquired during my post-graduate teaching and research fellowship in physiological psychology. I subsequently taught English for six years to undergraduates at the Scuola di Economia e Commercio, Università degli Studi di Pisa (Italy). While there I assisted professors and graduate students in the Biology Department, translating and editing their research papers for publication in English-language journals. I taught English at the local elementary school and tutored high school students in English as well.

After returning to Nevada, I taught adult ESL classes through the community college in Elko. I enrolled in the M. Ed. program at the University of Nevada in Reno and obtained teacher certification (Special Education, K-12). I have several years of classroom experience, teaching English language arts, math, science and social studies, along with social and organizational skills. I assessed and taught students with learning and emotional disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, developmental delays and physical disabilities.

The most rewarding part of teaching is understanding and meeting the needs of the individual student. Every learner has unique strengths to build on and challenges to overcome, and the right tutor can make a tremendous difference.

Before beginning lessons I arrange to meet with the prospective student (or parent, in the case of a minor), free of charge, to discuss specific needs and goals. Please contact me with any questions.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

As a licensed teacher, I have taught many students with ADD/ADHD at all grade levels. My teaching experience has equipped me with the skills and tools needed to engage the interest of students with ADD/ADHD so that they can be more successful academically and socially.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I taught English as a second language in Italy, to undergraduate students of economics at the Università degli Studi di Pisa for six years. At the same time I also taught English to Italian elementary and secondary students. After returning to the US, I taught ESL classes to adults in a community college program in northern Nevada for two years.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have several years of experience teaching math concepts to students transitioning from elementary math to algebra. Many students get "stuck" at some point during this process and find it hard to go forward. I present concepts with exercises, review, and practice tests created to meet the needs of the individual student.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have many years of experience editing and proofreading scholarly articles and doctoral dissertations prior to submission. It is always a great pleasure to assist writers in improving clarity and style.
Special Needs

Special Needs

I have been a licensed teacher in Nevada and Kansas and taught special education students, from kindergarten to 12th grade. I have taught students with specific learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, developmental delays, autism spectrum disorders, emotional disturbances, and physical impairments. As a special education teacher I developed the students' individualized educational plans, adapted or designed teaching materials, and used a variety of instructional approaches to meet their individual needs.

Knowledgeable great tutor

Jaden has improved tremendously! Lana is a great tutor and has helped Jaden in reading, writing, sight words and math. Can see the improvement he has made and the teachers at his school have told me as well!

Very patient and understanding

Lana has been very patient and understanding with our thirteen year old. She has taught a couple lessons and like anything it takes a few times to understand the tutor and teaching methods. We are looking forward to the next few sessions and watching our son improve in a couple areas.
