My love of science started as a young child. As soon as I could read, I consumed everything I could find on almost every subject. I was especially drawn to physics, astronomy, and chemistry. My electrical engineering career started at the age of six when I got shocked plugging in the toaster! I received a 50-in-one project kit for my birthday at the age of 11 or 12 and began building circuits and experimenting with oscillators, radio receivers, electromagnets, electrolysis, and optics. I was very interested in high voltage circuits, lasers, and particle accelerators. I soon discovered the wonders of crystal radio receivers and shortwave broadcasts that could be picked up from around the world merely using simple tuned circuits and long-wire antennas. I took classes on electronics technology during both my Junior and Senior years of high-school as an elective. At university, I completed a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, I worked as an electronics engineer for more than 18 years, developing automated test systems for military avionics.

I never lost my childhood curiosity and love of learning. I am passionate about science, mathematics, and education. I have a long history of "hands-on" experience experimenting, building, and teaching others in a variety of settings. Algebra 1

Algebra is one of the subjects where students often get confused and discouraged. I believe that many of the difficulties are overcome by careful attention to the steps and showing all all of your work. There is a symmetry and pattern to algebra that can be very helpful. I believe that many students who struggle with algebra don't realize that they already intuitively know much of it, but are not able to recognize what they know, because it is written in a "language" that is unfamiliar to them. I can help them to become more comfortable with this new "language" that is the leap from the familiar concrete world of arithmetic to the unfamiliar abstract world of symbolic mathematics.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

As an engineer and amateur scientist, I use algebra all the time to solve real world problems. I use it to understand circuit designs. I use it to design and build bamboo flutes. I even use algebra to manage our family's finances. I believe having practical applications is very helpful to students who are struggling to understand abstract concepts. I can bring that "real world" example to the tutoring session to help the student "get" it.
Astronomy

Astronomy

Astronomy is one of my greatest passions. I consume everything I can find on this fascinating subject. I have a solid conceptual grasp of the relative size scales and distances in our universe, as well as the physics, chemistry, and techniques used by astronomers to understand the composition and behavior of stars, planets and galaxies. I also have a clear understanding of how the discoveries of modern physics (i.e. quantum mechanics and general relativity) have joined the disciplines of chemistry and physics into a powerful tool for understanding the inner workings of stars and galaxies through observational data and theoretical modeling. I especially love telling students about the astronomical distance ladder, stellar life-cycles, and the process of nuclear fusion which forges the all chemical elements from which we ourselves are made within the fiery cores of massive stars!
Calculus

Calculus

Other than electrical engineering circuit analysis, calculus is my top tutoring subject. I have a great deal of recent tutoring experience with single variable differential and integral calculus both at the high-school and college level. I can help you through the sometimes rocky road to success in this fascinating, but sometimes confusing subject. If you're struggling, I can help.
Chemistry

Chemistry

Chemistry was the first subject in which I remember many of my high-school classmates coming to me for help, even during class. I often would "translate" what the teacher was saying for many in my class who just weren't "getting" it. I found that I had a "knack" for explaining things in ways that other students could more easily understand. This process also helped me gain a more solid grasp on the subject myself.
Electrical Engineering

I have a Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and more than 23 years of experience developing and maintaining automated test systems for the testing of avionics in digital, analog, and radio frequency technologies. I am comfortable with DC and AC linear circuit analysis as well as basic analog and digital circuit design concepts. I have a working comfort level with radio frequency electronics concepts including impedance matching on antennas and transmission lines as well as grounding, shielding, and noise issues. Most of my tutoring experience has been focused on sinusoidal steady-state analysis, phasor analysis, transient analysis, complex frequency analysis, as well as Fourier and Laplace transforms applied to these topics.

My experience in geometry is directly related to the applications of it in so many other areas of science and mathematics. In electrical and mechanical engineering courses, vector mathematics is used extensively, which draws upon a whole host of geometrical concepts and applies them in multiple practical ways.
Physics

Physics

Physics is the basis of all understanding of the physical world at its most fundamental level. As an engineer and amateur scientist, I put the concepts of electromagnetism, motion, forces, energy conversion, energy transfer, and optics to practical use in a variety of different ways. The beauty of the mathematics which describes the physical processes in the natural world is something that I am passionate about helping students to grasp and appreciate. Many of the concepts in physics are "variations on a theme" and the same mathematics applies to many very different topics (such as mechanical vibrations and electromagnetic waves or electric circuits and fluid dynamics). Classical Newtonian physics sets the foundation to take the "wild leap" later into the bizarre world of relativity and quantum mechanics, where time and space get "bent" and an electron can be in two places at once (as long as nobody is looking)!

This subject is a natural extension of Algebra 2 and Trigonometry. I have used advanced algebra, trigonometry, and calculus in my electronics engineering career as well as in my hobby pursuits and home-brew science projects. I can help students understand the concepts and gain a mastery of the skills necessary to succeed in this subject.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

It is impossible to overstate just how fundamental trigonometry is to applied mathematics, science, and engineering! Trigonometry is one of my all time favorite subjects not only because I use it all the time, but it's just really, really, cool! Euler's identity has to be the most beautiful, profound, and practically useful mathematical discovery of all time! Come with me and we'll explore this topic together, trust me, it'll be fun!

Jason helped me a lot in my Mathmematics behind signals course. It is a very rigorous course and he spent a lot of time explaining topics and taking me through multiple examples. I came away much more confident in my approach to the circuit analyis problems I had questions on. This lesson was focused on sinusoidal steady state analysis of linear circuits using phasors, transient analysis of linear circuits using laplace transforms, as well as norton and thevenin equivalents.
