I am a professional educator with over 30 years of teaching experience, specializing in social work, sociology, adult education, and English as a Second Language (ESL). I hold a Master’s degree in Social Work and a Doctorate in Communication, along with a certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). My training includes a 120-hour TEFL certificate and additional credentials in Online English Tutoring, Tutoring English, and (by the end of 2025) Teaching Business English and Test Preparation.
I began teaching in 1987 and have taught at the college level for many years, working with both undergraduate and graduate students in the U.S. My professional experience also includes serving as an administrator and social worker, which allows me to bring real-world knowledge into my tutoring. In addition, I have taught in adult education programs, preparing students for the GED exam and supporting adult learners in social studies and language arts.
My ESL tutoring focuses on intermediate and advanced learners, particularly those working in healthcare, veterinary care, social work, and hospitality fields. Many of my students are professionals who want to build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing English in real-world situations. I use a theme-based approach, integrating conversation, reading, role-play, and writing into lessons. I also incorporate strategies from Teaching from the Back of the Room, which emphasize active learning, engagement, and practical application.
Over the years, I have worked with a wide range of students, from young adults to mid-career professionals, in both classroom and one-on-one settings. I value creating a supportive learning environment where students feel safe to take risks with language. My goal is always to help learners improve their skills while also building the confidence they need to succeed at school, at work, and in everyday life.
