About Aaron

Bio

I am an experienced math tutor for adults, college students, and HS students in Santa Fe. I believe in the power of visualizing math concepts to understand them. I also believe math is easiest to learn when you're using it to actually do something — not just pushing numbers and symbols around. Previous students have said I am a patient and invested teacher.

If you want to improve your math abilities for school or any other reason, if you want to learn math for programming and creative coding, or you just want a personal coach to support your interests in technical subject matter, I would like to connect with you.

My background: I was a successful math major in college before I obtained my PhD. My research expertise is the field of dynamical systems applied to problems in theoretical neuroscience. In addition to countless hours working one-on-one with learners, I have taught college courses on physics, computational science, and persuasive writing. Previous subjects I've tutored: quantum mechanics, differential equations, fluid dynamics, electromagnetism, and statistical mechanics.

Computer Programming

Computer Programming

My Ph.D. dissertation research involved simulating large networks of "virtual" neurons and synapses. I coded numerical models of neurons and synapses in order to perform experiments on these neural networks. In order to do design the simulations efficiently, I used an object-oriented approach in C++. The simulations generated vast amounts of data which I analyzed using MATLAB scripts. Eventually, I translated all of this into Python language to continue my research with undergraduates as a faculty member after graduate school. I have also taught courses that involved lengthy projects that required computer programming.
Differential Equations

Differential Equations

I have a PhD in Physics, a subject that relies foundationally on a variety of techniques used to solve differential equations. I received A's in most of my graduate physics coursework such as quantum mechanics, electromagnetism and classical mechanics, where advanced techniques such as Fourier analysis were used extensively to solve differential equations. I have taught college courses on these subjects that introduce students to solving differential equations, and I have also excelled in courses as a math undergraduate that taught me the rigorous foundations of many types of differential equations.
JavaScript

JavaScript

20+ years creating programmatic art. I've used many different languages, but recently, I'm using p5js and Elm (an elegant functional language that compiles to JS).
Linear Algebra

Linear Algebra

I received A's in most of my graduate physics coursework such as classical mechanics, computational methods and quantum mechanics where techniques from linear algebra such as eigenvalue calculation and matrix diagonalization were used extensively. I have introduced students to basic applied linear algebra in undergraduate physics courses I have developed and taught. I also use linear algebra extensively writing software that operates on array objects.

Great first impression!

Aaron did a great job of meeting me on my level and taking me through the process of finding anti derivatives, what that meant, and how that related to the fundamental theorem of calculus. Was really happy with how he gave me opportunities to work through the examples and come to conclusions on my own.

Great Teacher

You can tell Aaron really cares about the student learning everything they need to know. He quickly adapted to teaching me the way that I learn best and made the material relatable to me. I am going to continue lessons because after one lesson I already feel like I have progressed quite a bit.

Great job

Aaron does a great job of not only explaining some tricky math, but also helped me greatly being able to comprehend complex ideas.
