I recently completed my first year as a high school chemistry teacher, teaching 10th-grade chemistry in an International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Before becoming a classroom teacher, I served as a teaching assistant for undergraduate organic chemistry courses at the University of Chicago. Across classroom teaching, leading discussion sections, laboratory instruction, and 1-on-1 office hours, I have experience teaching and supporting students ranging from high school sophomores to university undergraduates.
My favorite way to teach is one-on-one because it allows me to meet students where they are, adapt explanations to their individual needs, and move at the pace that works best for them. When helping a student with chemistry, I like to begin by identifying areas of confusion or determining which topics are the highest priority to focus on. From there, we can review the underlying concepts and work through practice problems. Depending on a student's needs, I can help with concept reinforcement, problem-solving practice, homework support, test and quiz preparation, or AP Chemistry exam review.
I want students to feel comfortable asking questions and thinking through problems step-by-step rather than worrying about immediately having the “right” answer. Chemistry can be difficult, and some struggle is completely normal while learning challenging material.
