Teaching IB and AP students at TASIS American School in England (9.5 years) was an enriching experience that prepared me well for working at United World College-USA (2.5 years). My work in these institutions has broadened my intellectual and cultural horizons beyond my expectations, and I feel that my teaching, learning, and mentoring strengths thrive in these international environments. My tutoring style is based fundamentally on the intersection between a reflective understanding of the student’s personal journey and a detailed understanding of the IB diploma programme. Impactful tutoring involves enabling the synergy between these two worlds.
When working with diverse students—collectively and individually—my priority is to determine what their curricular and personal goals and challenges are. Then I quickly determine a differentiated path designed to address both simultaneously, making on-going adjustments as the learning journey proceeds. I achieve this goal by modelling the effective use of the requisite skill(s) followed by carefully guiding students toward developing and demonstrating them independently. The foundation of this bespoke approach is always the intrinsic and extrinsic understanding of texts. I am also a proponent of Assessment for Learning as a route to achievement on exams—I consistently balance the means of teaching and learning with the importance of successful end-of-year exams.
