Summer Learning Fun!

I am an educator currently working for a non-profit organization in Albuquerque.
Originally from the Midwest, I am a graduate of Albuquerque High and the University of New Mexico. While pursuing my degree in Elementary Education, I worked as a preschool teacher and as an onsite leader for a Campfire Before and After School program.
I have two children who have gone through the Albuquerque Public School system. I have been involved extensively as a room parent and school volunteer. I specifically enjoy interacting with families and children. In my current position I taught a summer school cooking class which incorporated a variety of learning opportunities using an integrated curriculum format that provided opportunity for interdisciplinary learning by incorporating history and geography, math and measuring, reading and literature, and cooking activity.
I remember what it was like for both myself and for my children the experience of navigating through the Elementary school system and on to junior high and middle school. I try to understand the student’s anxiety regarding the thought of using a tutor, and know that the idea of summer school can be daunting. I respond with sympathy, empathy and a desire to make our time together fun and a worthwhile and memorable use of summer activity time.
I would like to complement my current teaching job with work in a hands-on environment that would create meaningful experiences for children and I can think of no better way to do so than with a tutoring program and related activities.
