Hello! Allow me to introduce myself: I'm Iris, and I have a lot of experience with students of all ages. Mainly a college-level instructor, I also tutor middle school students, and adults! I attended a Writing PhD program at Virginia Tech (2018-2021), hold an MA in English from Virginia Tech (pending degree award 2022), as well as an MA in Rhetoric and Writing Studies from San Diego State University (2016), and a BA in English and American Literature from The American College of Greece (2014). I have been teaching since 2010 as a private tutor, and have an 8-year experience teaching college writing.

I can help you with:
--Any type of essay, report or letter.
--College essays, personal essays.
--Resumes and Websites.
--Public speaking.
--Preparing presentations and practicing.
--Analyzing any kind of text (written, audiovisual, etc.).
--Preparing for TOEFL and GRE.
--Develop your study and revision skills.
--Grammar and vocabulary.
--Build confidence in your own writing and speaking.
--Master critical thinking.
--Completing applications.
--Preparing for an interview.

My objective is to help students develop their writing skills and their critical thinking skills! It is important we learn from our mistakes, and I usually teach students this through helping them with revisions. I prompt students to use their personal experiences as an anchor for their writing. In addition to developing writing skills, while tutoring I will help you work on your communication skills, and your public speaking skills--an important component of life. But most of all, my teaching pedagogy is informed by my will to see students thrive as a result of having faith in themselves and their abilities.

I will be more than happy to answer any questions and I am very flexible in my schedule. You may also find more details about my experience under the individual subjects I tutor. I try to answer messages as soon as I can, and definitely within the same day!

I have been a college instructor for 8 years, working closely with students of multiple needs, including learning disabilities, and more specifically dyslexia. I have been doing private tutoring, both in Europe and in the US, for twelve years now. This has provided me with extensive experience into different homeschooling settings and methods, as I have been hired to assist multiple students who are being homeschooled--of different ages, and in different regions. This has provided me with a multitude of experience, which was further enhances by the focus of my graduate research in alternative methods of pedagogy, and in inclusive learning methods and communities.

As a non-native speaker myself, I have had experience in being taught English since my early years of elementary school. Soon after graduating high school, I began teaching English as a Second Language and preparing students of all ages for the Cambridge Language Certifications, as well as for IELTS. Because of my experience as a student, I have significant insight into the processes of language learning, which helps me to better facilitate my students.

From my undergraduate studies in English and American Literature, to my Graduate Level Studies in Rhetoric, Composition, and Writing Studies, I have had to take classes in Linguistics, English Grammar and Vocabulary, as well as extend my pedagogical research on these subjects. Public Speaking

Public Speaking

An important part of the art of Rhetoric-which is what I gained my MA in-is that of delivery, or as it is most widely known, Public Speaking. Public speaking encompasses the art of argumentation (Rhetoric), in which I am highly proficient as a tutor and teacher of argumentative writing. It also requires a great deal of communication skills, which I am able to teach to my students in my capacity as a scholar of rhetoric, and as an experienced educator. Supplementing my academic qualifications is my experience in both formal and informal presentations, as well as in debating.

Study Skills

Study Skills

In addition to my positions as a private tutor, a Writing Center tutor, a tutor and teacher in Academic Writing, I have held Advisory positions which require me to work with students on a one-to-one basis in order to help them develop their studying skills. Since most of my students are either high school students or freshmen, it is integral to my job that I facilitate them in learning how to properly study in a manner that works for them, so that they ensure for themselves a smooth and enjoyable school or college experience, respectively. In addition, I have had experience with preparing students for language examinations, when it is required that they follow a rather strict method of studying, so that they meet particular learning outcomes.
TOEFL

TOEFL

Since I am a non-native speaker myself, I have accumulated many years of being taught English. This experience helps me to better understand what goes into learning another language, and it has been valuable in my work as a teacher and tutor. My students report that they are greatly aided by my explanations of the readings and of grammar rules. Additionally, as I had to take the TOEFL exam myself, I am familiar with both the preparation process and the examination.
