When I tutor writing, I teach the student a variety of pre-writing activities such as freewriting, brainstorming and outlining that are helpful in generating thoughts and ideas, and organizing those ideas. In subsequent sessions, I will review the student's rough drafts, making any corrections in grammar, punctuation and spelling, and offering suggestions about how the paper can be better organized with a thesis, introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. If necessary, I will make suggestions about essay development and flow.
When I tutor reading, I have the student read a sample text aloud in order to determine the student's skill level and fluency. Based on that initial assessment, I would offer a number of reading techniques to improve greater ease and ability. I would continue the process of having the student read aloud, and engage in a conversation with the student in order to determine the level of comprehension.
