I have been a proud math teacher for 13 years and hold a National Board Certification for high school mathematics education. I hold a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from the University of New Mexico and a master's degree in mathematical statistics from the University of West Florida. I have taught the spectrum of high school math courses, including Algebra 1 and 2, Precalculus, Statistics, and Calculus. I have experience with both AP and IB mathematics courses. In addition, I am fluent in and certified to teach Spanish. I minored in Spanish at the University of New Mexico and have spent significant time in central Mexico, including a full summer living in Mexico and teaching English classes. I absolutely love both math and Spanish, and helping students to develop their understanding of the world around them through these beautiful subjects is one of my greatest passions!
I have also tutored students individually in the same subjects I have taught in the classroom. My goal in individual tutoring is to give students a space to process the concepts they felt were difficult or covered too quickly in the classroom. I ask my tutoring students to bring notes and work with them so I can see the methods used in class. This way I can help to explain the methods from the classroom in different ways and in a setting that allows for a back-and-forth discussion, and I can also provide the student alternative ideas and methods about how to approach a concept.
A crucial part of the tutoring experience for high school students is the parents' involvement. During an initial tutoring session, I ask for parents to be a part of the meeting. This way I can get an idea of what both the student and the parent want out of tutoring. In my experience, expectations vary, and I want to ensure that I am designing sessions in ways that meet the needs of each family. It is also my preference to check in with parents at least once a month to ensure that they feel their child's needs are being met.
