Hello! My name is Alyssa J. and I love chemistry! I received my bachelor's degree in Chemistry and a minor in Physics. I then completed my masters and PhD in inorganic chemistry. I have 7 years of experience working with students learning introductory chemistry both as STEM and non-STEM focused majors. I have worked extensively on designing guided inquiry labs which give more flexibility and increased understanding in students. I love using real-world examples to explain chemistry without using chemistry terms to build a foundation to build off of.
I have worked with students from elementary school demonstrations, middle school and high school field trips, and I am currently teaching general chemistry for first year college students. I ask where students are currently at in their understanding and then find areas that need additional support to have students build up their own knowledge. I utilize worksheets, word problems, real-world examples, and interactive demonstrations to explain concepts without assuming that each student is at the same foundational level. More recently I have been teaching full time for 2 years working with a variety of students from 15 years old up to mid 60s. I look forward to working with anyone who wants to build their foundational skills in chemistry and see how applicable this subject can be into their every day life.
I cannot wait to chat with you soon!
