Hello prospective students! my name is Julian, and I am a Neuroscience PhD student, researcher, and aspiring professor.

I have two years of teaching experience as a supplementary instruction (SI) facilitator at New Mexico State University. While at NMSU, I taught multiple SI sections of chemistry (Gen Chem I, Gen Chem II, and Chemistry for nursing students) in addition to serving as a TA during lectures and hosting office hours. My style of teaching combines personalized lesson planning and Socratic methods so that my students can not only learn, but also retain information long term. Seeing all of my students succeed is immensely rewarding, and I always do my best to go the extra mile to ensure their success.

My focus as a neuroscientist is on neuromodulation, specifically the application of neuromodulation techniques in their treatment of psychiatric disorders and improving their efficacy as treatment modalities.

My research experience at UTHSC involved investigating how dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis worsened epilepsy outcomes and increased SUDEP risk. Here I learned surgical techniques such as implantation of telemetry probes and jugular catheters, as well as stereotactic hippocampal injections in mice. Additionally, I wrote the immunohistochemistry protocol for post-epilepsy mossy fiber sprouting in the dentate gyrus using ZnT-3 (Zinc transporter) stain. To investigate the role of autonomic drive in the context of SUDEP, I administered drugs such as atenolol and scopolamine. To confirm neuroanatomical structural changes consistent with epileptogenic effects, I perfused and sectioned the hippocampus using a cryostat. My histological sections were imaged using fluorescence microscopy.

My current research as a PhD student is clinical and computational in nature and focused on electric field (E-field) modeling and EEG analysis of non-invasive brain stimulation treatment.
