I attended the University of Pittsburgh, where I took and succeeded in many high level biochemistry courses. In addition, I excelled in both the SAT and ACT, attaining a 1520 and 33 respectively. During my education, I found that one of the best ways I could retain my own material was by teaching and explaining material to others. During my time as an undergraduate student, I was a teaching assistant in intro to biochemistry, intro to biology, and various science lab courses. As such, I've learned to communicate effectively with students that have many different learning styles. From high school students getting ready to take the SAT/ACT to other undergraduate students, I was able to learn a lot about what works for different types of students. I also developed a strong foundational science background in this way, so I look forward to being able to extend that knowledge towards other students interested in pursuing an education in scientific fields. I mainly have been tutoring online, but am able to tutor in person in the local Pittsburgh area as well.
In terms of specific methods of tutoring, I find active recall and problem set walkthroughs to be very effective. Me and my students have found success with these methods, because it allows the student to understand the material instead of plain memorization. In working through problem sets and question material with students, I explain the foundational knowledge and work through the problems by letting the student take the lead. I find that this approach allows students to have some sort of autonomy in the way they learn, and also allows them to build up the confidence in tackling tough material.
