Hi there,
My name is Kevin. I'm an experienced teacher / tutor who has worked for 10+ years both in the US and abroad. I've taught in South Africa as a US Peace Corps Volunteer, in Japan, in New Jersey, and online in a few different capacities. I usually work with middle-school students on whatever subject they're struggling with, and love to find ways to connect what we're learning with a student's interests. Dispelling the notion that some of us have "math brains" or "artistic brains"...
Hi there,
My name is Kevin. Dispelling the notion that some of us have "math brains" or "artistic brains" and some of us don't is a key goal of mine.
In a tutoring setting, my methodology is first to organize an effective learning space - few distractions, understood norms in the family around learning time, and necessary materials. This sets the foundation for effective, consistent learning. Second, I strive to get to know the student and to understand the things they enjoy learning and the things that they don't. Every student is different, and one-on-one tutoring offers the ability to tailor an entire lesson solely for the student. Third, I connect the time in session to tangible goals in the classroom - this can mean utilizing grade-level standards (e.g., will be able to write a five-paragraph essay in 20 minutes utilizing a thesis, topic sentences, and conclusion), or understanding the milestones the students, parents, and teacher are trying to achieve.
Lastly, I want to note that I've taught special needs students and classrooms extensively, and have lots of experience working with students with learning differences. My approach in these cases is largely the same, except I utilize individualized strategies to work with the student, such as structured breaks, clear visualizations, breathing exercises, etc.
