Hello. I have been a first grade teacher for the past 11 years in a wonderful public school district. I am trained in the Wilson Fundations Program, this is an intense phonics learning tool. I also am trained in Six Trait Writing, this utilizes the writer imagination as they display their voice, organization and word choice. I also have recently been trained to use the TCA running record to determine a readers independent reading level as well as their guided reading level. I have been tutoring privately for most of those years as well. My tutoring capabilities are not limited to first grade as I am qualified to teach to 6th grade. I believe in using a hands on approach to tutoring, I feel students who are actively involved in their learning process learn quicker and smarter. I incorporate games, sensory manipulative as well as imagination. I believe in the philosophy that "it is OK not to know, but it is not OK to not try". One student I have tutored for the last four years just went on to win the DAR Essay contest for the state of New Jersey. He is a fifth grade student with Aspergers, I started tutoring him when he was in first grade mostly in the subjects of reading and writing. I am very proud of his accomplishment, he has worked very hard to get where he is today. I look forward to meeting future students. Hello. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
