Hello! I am an educator who is passionate about science. I have a degree in Marine Biology and use to work in that and other biological fields before becoming a full-time teacher. While earning my degree, I worked as an Environmental Educator at a coastal nature center and ran school field trips. Later, I worked for a marine mammal stranding facility where I also did educational outreach. Following this, I worked for the Department of Agriculture in developing a possible biological control to mosquitoes, and finally worked in a lab processing biopsied tissue samples. Though I loved working in these science fields, I always had a passion for teaching rather than doing and decided to look into that field.
I love to share my knowledge and excitement for this field with others, and hopefully make a seemingly unapproachable subject not so difficult.
I often share with my students that science was never an easy subject for me and that I understand the misunderstandings and confusion that sometimes makes science a scary subject to try and master. It is because I needed to overcome hurdles myself, in order to become successful in this field, that I can empathize with student struggles. Being that I was in their shoes once, I am very successful with helping my students become more confident in their abilities to learn and, yes, even enjoy science!
I have been teaching since 2006 in subjects including biology, chemistry, environmental science, marine biology, and ecology. Within any of those subjects, I focus on bringing out the "problem solver" in each of my students. While content and "facts" are important, usually one is successful in science if they can also think critically and approach a new problem in a systematic way.
I am here to help anyone who feels frustrated with science, whether it be all of the "facts" to remember, you can seem to wrap your head around some of the abstract processes, or maybe you need help with writing lab reports or developing a science fair experiment. Feel free to c
