Hello! I've tutored privately and volunteered as a tutor and mentor for kids of all ages for around 14 years now, and teaching is my passion and profession. I currently teach math and social studies in a private middle and high school, and I formerly taught Religion and French full time to high school students. I completed my Bachelor’s in Religion and French but have always had extensive interest and experience tutoring and learning math and science. English is my first language, but I am native bilingual with Egyptian Arabic. I see teaching as my life’s purpose.

I have almost 7 years experience tutoring/teaching high school math and science: algebra 1, geometry, and algebra 2, pre calculus, and physics. I have been tutoring SATs for almost ten years as well.

I was a swim instructor at a local YMCA, teaching people of all ages from 4 to 66, most of whom went from fearing water to swimming/treading in around 6 to 10 weeks. This has helped me become especially skilled helping students with different (sometimes extreme) aversions to learning as I've found ways to build confidence and comfort in the face of frustrating academic situations. Patience and compassion are not only virtues, but valuable skills!

Most importantly, teaching is much more than just knowing the subject; it is the ability to pass it successfully to the student. It is my job to be flexible and engaging while bringing life and value to the subjects. For example, an elementary student of mine was uninterested in fractions, and struggling with word problems. I took an apple from the kitchen and told him to think about a scenario in which he'd need to share his apple with his sister, and his attitude began to shift to curiosity and interest.

I provide background and explanation and then ask my students questions for critical thinking and deep connections to material. Concepts must be deeply understood--otherwise skills from drills become forgotten immediately once finished.
My students leave feeling encouraged and well equipped.

Currently teaching Algebra 2 at a private school, and I have 8 years of experience in the subject. Additionally, I have tutored in college level algebra 2 “adjacent” math courses.

Geometry

Geometry

I have over two years experience teaching high school geometry, successfully preparing students for exams and to improve grades. My methods are tailored to each individual student, with a focus on a deep understanding of concepts to better ground the students for preparation for further math. I prefer this approach to the drills and memorization often favored with school curriculum.

I got a perfect score in the writing section 2/3 times I took the SAT, and 790 the other time. I've tutored several other students in the subject who have all have improved their scores. There are some simple methods that work, and with practice anyone can do it!
Swimming

Swimming

I was a swim instructor for the YMCA for just over 1 year in 2014, leaving to focus my schedule on university. I swam competitively on the Peddie Aquatics swim-team from young childhood through Junior year of high school. In my final year I joined Princeton Tigers Water Polo, subsequently playing college club water polo for Columbia University, before transferring to Rutgers. Throughout my time at Rutgers I was on the triathlon team. I have never been able to leave the pool! **Note: Lesson rates differ from my academic rate.
Writing

Writing

As long as I have been tutoring, I have tutored writing. I graduated with high honors in two writing-intensive majors, and my strong multilingual background gives me deep understanding of the ins-and-outs of language composition. I have tutored students in writing who are ESL, as well as high school sophomores and juniors in honors and AP writing classes. I received a full score on my SAT writing section. Thank you for your consideration.

Janna B Excellent French Tutor

Janna tutored my daughter in High school French III. She was failing the course and within a very short period of time her grade improved to a B. She gave my daughter the confidence she needed to succeed. Janna is reliable, accommodating in scheduling lessons and an excellent tutor. I highly recommend her. If my daughter is in need of a tutor in the future I would contact Janna first.
