Hello, I’m Mike! When I graduated with a Master’s degree in Childhood Education, I already had over five years of volunteer after-school tutoring experience, working with young students and helping them use their specific strengths to overcome their learning challenges. Since graduating, I’ve had five years experience teaching in a wide range of diverse and inclusive classrooms, completed extensive additional graduate-level coursework in Special Education, and have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham phonics-based approach to literacy.
In each of those classrooms I built on my previous tutoring experience through individual and small group teaching and assessment. Working extensively with children with diverse learning styles including neurodivergent students and students with learning disabilities, I helped guide them to success in mathematics, reading comprehension, phonics, and writing. My tutoring approach involves getting to know the strengths and challenges of the individual student first, then adapting their current elementary curricula goals into accessible, stress-free milestones. My lessons are multi-sensory and tailored to the learning style of the individual student, and involve positive reinforcement, ongoing informal assessments, and structured routines.
As a former classroom teacher, I know first-hand how valuable an asset parents and caregivers are when helping a struggling student find success.
