I have been teaching and tutoring for twenty years now. I have always loved teaching. I knew that I wanted to be a teacher when I started playing school with my little brothers and cousins (they were my students). Now to present day, I still love teaching.
I am certified to teach special education and general education. I have a degree in teaching elementary education students and a certification in teacher of the handicapped. I have taught all grades and have learned many strategies that have helped my students over the years. When I am teaching and tutoring, the first thing I do is get to know them as learners. So, it's important for me to modify all of my lessons so that I am meeting all of my students needs. When I am teaching English, I focus on teaching strategies that they can use independently while they are reading and writing. I utilize graphic organizers, implement mnemonic devices and guided questions as they are writing or completing an essay. I teach my students how to respond after reading text and the most formal ways to write a literary response. I provide feedback to my students. I find breaking their reading and writing into smaller components really helps students focus on their structure and organization. Providing samples and ways for students to annotate text as they read helps aide with understanding and comprehension of the material provided. Most times, I will also provide examples of concepts we can do together. When I am tutoring various levels of Math, I provide strategies on how to solve the problem or word problem. I teach my student how to solve the problem so that they understand why and how and can apply it to other problems with me or independently. I have taught all grades first grade through college. English, Math, study skills, and SAT prep are the ones that I tutor most often. All students were at different levels but it was wonderful to see them implementing the strategies and really feeling more confident as they worked through their classes.
