Bio

I hold a B.S. degree in Mathematics and previously earned a provisional New Jersey teaching certificate. Early in my career, I worked as an actuary and passed several professional exams. For the past 30+ years I have been a systems analyst, but teaching and tutoring have always been a passion of mine.

In addition to math, I have tutored English and Social Studies, including volunteer work with the Fortune Society helping adults prepare for their GED. I emphasize critical thinking and careful reading, since strong reading skills open the door to success in every subject, including math.

My particular strength is helping students master algebraic word problems, an area where many struggle. I believe steady practice is the key to real improvement. While last-minute tutoring before a big test may provide a boost, real progress comes with consistent effort over time.

Outside of work, I’m an avid reader and musician, both of which reinforce my belief that growth comes through practice and persistence.

I am available most weekdays and Sundays. I can travel to your location in Bergen County, NJ, or offer a discounted rate if you prefer to meet at my home.

I possess a BS degree in Mathematics (cum laude) from SUNY Albany. I grew up in NY State where I passed the Algebra Regents exam with a score of 98. In addition I have passed the Society of Actuaries exam 100 which encompasses subjects up to calculus and linear algebra. I have been tutoring algebra since high school and have done so on and off for over 30 years.

As part of my job as Systems Director for a Fortune 100 firm I have taught technical skills both formally and informally over my 25+ year career. Microsoft Excel is a staple in every position I have held throughout this time. (Of course we started with Lotus way way back!). I have taught more advanced concepts within Excel such as the valuable VLOOKUP command, relative vs absolute referencing, and macro scripting. My expertise includes writing macros, performing basic VBA editing, and applying advanced functions such as dynamic array formulas. I have extensive experience in data analysis, building efficient spreadsheets that translate complex information into actionable key performance indicators (KPIs).
