About Samuel

Bio

I am a math and science tutor with more than 10 years of experience teaching students in one-on-one, classroom, tutoring-center, and online settings. I earned a B.S. in Pure Mathematics with a minor in Computer Science from the City College of New York, and I am currently completing a master’s degree in Data Science through Harvard Extension School. My teaching experience has included middle school, high school, and college-level mathematics, as well as AP-level science courses.

I have taught Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus I and II, AP Calculus, SAT and SSAT Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. I have worked as a math teacher, online tutor, high school instructor, and lead educator. My own academic background includes a 1540 SAT score, 800s on multiple SAT Math subject exams, a 196/200 score on the Praxis Mathematics Content Knowledge exam, second place in the CUNY Math Challenge, and published research in computational geometry.

My tutoring style is diagnostic and highly individualized. I first identify where a student’s understanding begins to break down, then rebuild the missing foundation and guide the student through increasingly difficult problems until they can solve them independently. I focus on understanding rather than memorizing procedures, while also teaching efficient strategies for exams. One student I tutored improved from 65 to 95 on the SSAT Math section and was later admitted to Choate Rosemary Hall with a full scholarship. I enjoy helping students who are struggling just as much as those aiming for top scores, and I tailor each lesson to the student’s goals, pace, and current level.

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

I scored an 800 on SAT I Math Section, SAT IC, and SAT IIC Math. I have been tutoring high school students math subjects ranging from Algebra I to Calculus for the past 4 years. Try a couple of sessions with me, and you will see yourself improving in no time!
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I earned a B.S. in Pure Mathematics from the City College of New York and have more than 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring Algebra 1 in one-on-one, classroom, tutoring-center, and online settings. I have worked with students who are struggling with foundational skills as well as students preparing for more advanced mathematics. My approach is highly diagnostic: I identify the specific concepts or prerequisite skills causing difficulty, explain them in multiple ways, and provide targeted practice until the student can solve problems independently. I can also create customized problem sets based on a student’s recurring mistakes and progress, helping strengthen both understanding and confidence over time.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I scored an 800 on SAT I Math Section, SAT IC, and SAT IIC Math. I have been tutoring high school students math subjects ranging from Algebra I to Calculus for the past 4 years. Try a couple of sessions with me, and you will see Algebra II open up to you in no time!
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

I qualified for the AIME in high school after scoring above 120 on the AMC, and I later placed second in the CUNY Math Challenge, an undergraduate mathematics competition across CUNY colleges. I also competed in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition while studying mathematics at the City College of New York. I have taught AMC and competition mathematics to advanced high school students, including students from Bergen County Academies, using resources such as the Art of Problem Solving series and Titu Andreescu’s competition mathematics books. My teaching emphasizes creative problem solving, recognizing useful structures and techniques, and developing the mathematical reasoning needed for challenging AMC-style problems.
Calculus

Calculus

I earned a B.S. in Pure Mathematics from the City College of New York and have more than 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring calculus and related mathematics. I have taught Calculus I, Calculus II, and AP Calculus in one-on-one, classroom, tutoring-center, and online settings, including through Tutor.com and private academy instruction. My approach emphasizes conceptual understanding of limits, derivatives, integrals, and applications rather than relying only on memorized formulas. I also help students strengthen the algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus foundations that often determine whether they succeed in calculus.
Geometry

Geometry

I received 800 on SAT I Math Section, IC, and IIC subject tests. Many students have difficulty with geometry, because they are not taught to visualize their proofs instead of trying to simply writing them down. Geometry is interesting and fun, once you understand the graphic paradigm of doing math.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I earned a B.S. in Pure Mathematics from the City College of New York and have more than 15 years of experience teaching and tutoring Precalculus in one-on-one, classroom, tutoring-center, and online settings. I have worked with students on functions, polynomial and rational expressions, exponentials and logarithms, trigonometry, sequences, analytic geometry, and preparation for Calculus. My approach is highly diagnostic: I identify the specific algebraic or conceptual gaps that are slowing a student down, then use targeted explanations and customized practice to strengthen those areas. I also provide curated problem sets based on recurring mistakes and progress so students develop the fluency and understanding needed to succeed in Precalculus and move confidently into Calculus.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I earned a B.S. in Pure Mathematics from the City College of New York, and earned 800s on multiple SAT Mathematics subject exams. I have more than 10 years of experience teaching and tutoring high school mathematics, including Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and standardized test preparation. My SAT Math tutoring focuses on identifying recurring error patterns, strengthening weak prerequisite skills, and improving both accuracy and speed under timed conditions. I tailor practice to each student’s current score range and help students develop a repeatable problem-solving process for unfamiliar questions.
