My favorite part of the work is meeting with students one-on-one to facilitate improvements in reading, writing and reasoning, and I look forward to helping you surpass your goals. I especially enjoy working through the great texts and figures in the history of philosophy (including, but not limited to, classical Chinese and Indian philosophy, the philosophers of Greek antiquity, medieval philosophy, and Jewish and Islamic philosophy).

I presently teach philosophy/classics in an honors program as well as at a state research institution. I received my MA in philosophy from a top-ranked (Leiter) program and have also completed four years of PhD work. I have taught my own intro course for three semesters at two well-ranked private liberal arts universities, in which I emphasize philosophical writing, logic and the history of philosophy. I have also provided teaching and research assistance for a total of eight semesters.

My philosophical training (consisting of a two-year MA and four additional years of PhD experience) makes me a very close reader, allowing me to push students to see details they may have missed on a first pass through a text. I have edited texts for academic publications and helped colleagues and students refine their written work. My utilization of the Socratic method of teaching encourages students to improve their own skills so that they can continue to use them independently in the future.

While the options for listing my subjects on this site are somewhat limited, I would also be thrilled to work with anyone who wants to work on philosophy specifically (I have written papers on and taught most areas at least once!). I love just about every subject out there and would be happy to work with you to improve your writing or help you with a difficult text in any area.

Philosophy

I have an MA from a top-ranked (Leiter) analytic program and an additional four years of graduate work and teaching at two prestigious private schools with a continental/pluralist focus. I love making philosophical problems approachable so that even intro students can engage with the problems directly. I have also worked with upper-level philosophy students writing papers in philosophy of law, political and social philosophy and American philosophy. My interests have taken me through most of the major areas of philosophy, but my research focuses have been/are in the history of philosophy (including classical Chinese philosophy!), ethics, pragmatism and epistemology.

She delivers!

My son needed an above average grade in his final writing project to receive the desired final grade for the semester. This is a Scholar program Political Philosophy course taught by a very tough professor. Simply put, Chelsea understood the assignment and helped my kid to excel and get the grade he needed. My son is extremely happy to work with her!

Outstanding Philosophy Tutor

Chelsea booked a session with my son within 2 hours notice. It was a very nuanced and complicated assignment and she took step by step to help him complete the assignment. This included reading and explaining the lecture. She did an excellent job!
