Greetings all!
My name is Denise, and I am a secondary English teacher with over 10+ years experience teaching in the classroom. I have a BA in Literature and an MEd in Reading, and am a Certified Reading Specialist in the State of New Jersey. I have worked in classrooms large and small, from ICR (In-Class Resource) classes, to Academic and General Education, to Honors Level courses. Teaching Reading and Writing to students is what I enjoy most about my instructional practice.
I believe in building a positive and enthusiastic rapport with students, especially teens, and spend a lot of time focusing on a student's strong areas in order to maintain confidence and excitement in the classroom. It is positivity and confidence in one's self that students bring with them when they leave the classroom and, most importantly, it is positivity and self confidence that pushes them to move forward in their education.
When it comes to tutoring, I believe students need to remain focused and on task at all times. In order to gain as much as they can from a tutoring session, students need to have goals for each and every session they sit down for. These small goals and accomplishments builds up the confidence and momentum they need in order to keep focused in the classroom as well as on their own time, working independently.
Setting small goals and achieving them in each lesson is key to students gaining the proficiency and ability to complete tasks and understand the importance of time management; these skills are essential for college bound students who have to rely primarily on themselves to complete assignments at university.
Working with kids in a tutoring environment allots me the opportunity to give them the time and attention they may not receive in the classroom. Allowing students to shine in their own unique way gives me, as an educator, the opportunity to help them grow and learn in their own way.
Cheers,
Denise
