I am an English teacher who has taught for more than 10 years at the college-level. I studied English at both William Smith College & Rutgers University and English Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Through my studies at Teachers College, I learned how to ensure that a tutee remains an active participant. I will respond to your questions, but I will also make sure that you are staying challenged. For example, I once tutored a student who had a student visa and was still learning the English language. I chose to give her sample essay questions related to culture, specifically different religions. She found that she could first translate the material into her own language and then grasp how to respond to a writing prompt. Her first well-written paper was an analysis of an article on religion in Iran.

I love seeing the light bulb go on! Students do want to learn. Whether tutoring middle-school, high-schools, or college students, I have found through my experience of approximately 8 years of tutoring that writing is about learning structures. Once you learn the structure you are halfway there. The other half is determination. These two combined complete the individual. My approach is one that Teachers College suggested--begin with the quotations. Then form a thesis statement. A lot of students try the reverse approach when writing a paper and end up forming a thesis that they can't defend. Instead, I have students begin with their strength--finding quotes that are compelling--and then having them develop a paper around these passages. Students have had great success using this approach.

I am available to work with you in the following areas: college composition, literary analysis essays, speeches for Communication courses. I can help you with any assignment: from a current-events paper to a literature essay. I am available in person, specifically on weekends. I have experience with tutoring high school and college students, including ESL students, and he
