Hi, I’m Joanne! Math has been my favorite subject for as long as I can remember, and I love helping others discover that it can be both understandable and enjoyable. I graduated from an engineering school with dual degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Systems Engineering and spent five years as a Senior Software Engineer. Teaching, however, has always been a part of my life. I started tutoring in high school, when I was hired to tutor my peers in SAT Math, and later worked as a teaching assistant for engineering courses in college. I’ve been busy guiding my own kids through their math journeys, from Pre-K fundamentals through Algebra 2 with Trigonometry.
My engineering and programming background shapes the way I teach. I don’t want students to simply memorize formulas or follow steps without understanding why they work. Instead, I focus on strong fundamentals, logical thinking, and problem-solving skills. I break difficult concepts into smaller, manageable pieces and explain them in different ways until we find an approach that makes sense to the student. Every student learns differently, so I adjust my pace and teaching style to meet each student where they are. This personalized approach helps students feel more comfortable with challenging material and leads to those rewarding “Ah, now I get it!” moments when a difficult concept finally clicks. I also welcome textbooks, homework, worksheets, or other materials that parents and students would like to share so lessons can directly support what your child is learning in school.
I am highly responsive, easy to reach, and always welcome questions from both parents and students. Please note that I require a 36-hour cancellation notice for scheduled lessons. Currently, my primary subjects include Grades 1-6, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra 1, though other topics can absolutely be considered upon request. Please feel free to reach out with any additional questions or to schedule your first lesson!
