About Edward

Hi, I'm Edward,

I'm a certified teacher of English with extensive experience tutoring math through geometry, and into the fundamentals of trigonometry and calculus. I'm the content designer for two SAT preparation programs available on iTunes, using a smart flash card platform that gets efficient results.

I believe there are four components to doing well on the SAT test: specific knowledge, problem solving process, focus, and confidence. I make it my business to address all of these areas.

I've been tutoring SAT for 7 years and have many success stories. I've seen significant improvements in both the error rate of elite students and in percentage improvement among students whose scores started below average. Recently, I've been relying on a hybrid teaching approach where primary knowledge is accomplished through using my apps, while process is taught and supported through tutoring and exercises based in the apps. The results have been encouraging.

I am outlining designs for the approach to the new SAT test, which has a broader scope of math concepts, more various and mixed set of challenges to editing skills, longer optional writing sample which taxes endurance, and more content based passage reading, with graph and chart reading, and less reliable authority--calling for recognition of biases and faulty assumptions.

Lately in my tutoring lab, I'm developing techniques that are showing results in improving basic focus and addressing "Test Anxiety". Ask me about my findings, if you fear your child is not suited to standardized testing. I may just be able to help.

I'm innovative in my approach. I understand how the test emphasizes skills not really taught within the high school curriculum. With this insight, I have tailored a program that teaches what is necessary for clearer understanding and better performance.

I have seen students start in the 1400 range and finish at 1900 in just ten weeks of programming. Recently, a student with 9 errors on SAT Writing scored a perfect after only three lessons. That same student went from a 700 in math to a 770 in 5 lessons, then an 800 on the following try after a 1/2-hour lesson. I have two 2300+ student finishes in the last 15 months, and a total of 8 800s in the same time period among my students.

Send me a student with two pencils, an SAT book (of my choosing) and a little smarts, and I'll get results that will affect his or her college acceptance list.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have seven years' experience teaching high school English. I worked a year in an after-school test prep/remediation/enrichment center. I had one student who practiced for the SAT and switched to the ACT ten days before the test date. She scored a perfect (36) in English.

I've created a vocabulary and reading drill app for the brainscape website that is available on iTunes.

ACT Math

I've tutored mathematics for five years. I teach in a way that stresses comprehension and versatility in problem solving.

I'm heading a project to create an SAT math tutorial for iPhone, iPad, and iPod app covering algebra and geometry. The last two students I taught in SAT math went from 700 to 770 in less than 15 hours of lessons. My method is a given/give/connect/path problem solving. I analyze error source very well and for most students improve confidence.

ACT Reading

I am certified to teach English in high school. I have 7 years experience teaching high school English. I worked a year in an after school test prep/remediation/enrichment center. I've logged 50+ hours tutoring ACT and created a reading drill and mapping course designed for the ACT and new SAT test.

Algebra 1

Throughout my teaching career, I've always tutored math. I've home schooled my own children in math for three years combined.

I'm currently designing two SAT math programs covering algebra and geometry concepts on the SAT. I have remediation, acceleration, and enrichment training available for algebra 1. I concentrate on filling gaps in knowledge within earlier math to facilitate growth in algebra. I have gotten middle school students into elite public high schools, and turned student who was failing in the 30 percentile to near 90 percent in less than two months.

Common Core

I'm a certified teacher of high school English, who has tutored in mathematics for 15 years. I've home schooled three children through all 8 grades and I tutor SAT/ACT math. I've tutor 30+ hours in Common Core at ele, middle and high school levels.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've home schooled my own kids from K-8th. I've spent two years as an elementary substitute. I am a certified teacher of English who has a 194/200 score on the NTE English. I have tutored more than 25 students in elementary math, language arts, and study skills.

Elementary Math

I've tutored mathematics throughout my teaching career. I have homeschooled my kids through algebra I. I stress comprehension of concepts and process efficiency. I target key knowledge and have created materials to help students master them far above the expectations of their school programs. I use better, more straightforward and challenging materials than are used in the schools.

Elementary Science

I teach better study skills for elementary science. The course basically entails content area reading and application of certain knowledge. It requires generally a written outcome.

I use digital smart flash cards as the best means to science knowledge. I use a Socratic guided discussion to create opportunities for application of knowledge. Then, I model well-reasoned responses and teach better writing.

English

I am a certified English teacher with seven years of experience in the classroom. I've taught American and British literature, writing, speculative literature, and etymology.

I stress an active reading approach favored by Princeton University's McGraw School of Education. I tend to teach books recommended by the College Board. I believe in challenging students with really good reading, and letting the great authors be the teachers.

I designed the content and wrote an SAT writing tutorial program for the Brainscape CBR platform available on iTunes since June of 2012. I designed and wrote an SAT reading program available on iTunes since November of 2013.

I can teach sentence diagramming, which is a lost art, but really improves the basic understanding of grammar.

ESL/ESOL

I'm a certified English teacher that has taught ESL/ESOL for two years. I have many documents designed to improve listening, speaking, reading, and writing for all levels.

I have proficiency in three other languages, so I have some understanding of the difficulties in acquiring a new language.

I have gotten a third year immigrant from Russia to a perfect score on the SAT sentence completion vocabulary portion of critical reading.

GED

I am a certified teacher of English who has experience with remediation training for students whose first attempts at subject mastery were unsuccessful. I show both the proper patience, support and encouragement to turn a student around and move them confidently forward in life.

Geometry

I have tutored mathematics throughout my teaching career. I teach observation, precision of knowledge, reasoning, proofs, and problem solving. I have digital smart flash cards that I've created to help with knowledge of terms and steps of logic.

Grammar

I taught high school English for seven years. I wrote a SAT writing tutorial program for the Brainscape CBR platform. I know how to teach sentence diagramming which is a lost art, but really improves the basic understanding of grammar.

SAT Reading

I have designed an SAT Prep program for the Brainscape CBR smart flashcard system. I taught English for seven years. I've tutored over 50 students in SAT Reading (some classified as learning disabled) and always saw significant improvement (cutting error rates in half).

SAT Writing

I've designed an SAT Writing program for the Brainscape CBR smart flashcard system. I'm a certified English teacher with 7 years of experience.

I've developed special fact sheets that make mastering the knowledge portion a snap. I generally can move a student to within three errors of a perfect score in three lessons (4.5 hours) on the multiple choice portion. For the essay portion, I can improve a student from 4 or 6 to 10 within 6-10 lessons. My writing system involves weighted practice for improving subject versatility and planning.
