Effective Writing is One's Best Offense and Defense

As a published author and adjunct writing professor, I give flight and creative energy to my students' capabilities to have confidence in their writing. Writing gives a person the opportunity to express themselves and to understand what's unique about their voice and how they can use this skill effectively in all facets of life. I enjoy working with young people and getting them to see that writing does not have to be a chore, but rather a tool that can set them apart from others.

The following are some of the comments that I have received from former students when they were asked to assess my skills as a writing instructor: "I loved being able to write about things that interest me." "Professor R. gave ma a chance to open my mind and think deeply about things." "She is a true teacher. I'm lucky to have had her class." I am very proud of these comments and this let's me know that I have been all that I am supposed to be as a teacher in elevating the skill level of each and every student I've had the opportunity to work with.

I am big on vocabulary. Throughout the semester, my students build a "vocabulary bank," because it is important know words. Ultimately, this is how you communicate with the world and your ability to write also translates in your communication skills. I've worked as a journalist and editor for a great number of years and have a clear understanding of the mechanics of writing. As an avid reader, I've been able to introduce my students to all forms of writing that help to shape their own.
