I have a PhD in literature and experience teaching at the college level. My focus in tutoring is to get students to do “critical” reading, which is to discover and understand the information and ideas in a piece of writing, and then to evaluate this information in order to carefully reflect and analyze the work.
Critical writing follows critical reading when students are able to make their own argument in the paper and support it from their critical reading of the text. This is a skill that will go beyond their tutoring session with me because they are being trained to become “critical” thinkers who can look at any given topic in more than just a literal way with the goal of analysis. Such an approach has many benefits, and one benefit is watching students gain confidence and competence by becoming critical thinkers, readers and writers. I tutor high school, college, and graduate level students.
Seeing students learn and grow gives me much satisfaction, and I approach students with a passion, dedication and dynamism that can be contagious. First of all I want to say that Brunda's teaching methodologies helped my daughter go from a 26 to a 32 score in ACT Reading, and a 27 to a 33 score in ACT English! Brunda did a phenomenal job with our daughter, and her instruction will serve my daughter for the rest of her life! My daughter improved consistently and immensely in both the English and Reading sections of the ACT exam through Brunda's teaching style and instruction. Brunda's patient and didactic approach has allowed my daughter to grow as a critical thinker and writer, and we have seen her not only improve in her ACT exam by several points but more importantly flourish in her overall 'new' analytical approach and writing prowess to her school subjects! Brunda truly teaches your child how to fish, and her approach to teaching will benefit your child for life. We strongly recommend her as a teacher for both ACT English and Reading, and trust me she will change the way your child thinks.
I am a high school senior and under Dr. Brunda's instruction for four months, my SAT critical reading score improved from the low 600s to low 700s. From the very beginning, Dr. Brunda was very encouraging. She helped strengthen my critical reading/thinking, which is essential in everyday life. I recommend Dr. Brunda for any student who desires to improve his/her SAT critical reading score.
I was so fortunate to find Brunda D. She was able to quickly identify where I was having challenges and help guide me through them. I never thought I could get through the writing assignment I had, but with her guidance I felt relieved and knew I could get through it. I received an "A" on the assignment and never would have if I didn't have her guidance.
She was wonderful. I would highly recommend her.
Brunda was great. She encourages the student to think about the best ways to express themselves. This process helped my daughter in writing her Admission essay. Thanks Brunda.
Dr. Brunda really connected with my son, in preparing him for the SAT. She provided him with the strategies, skills and confidence that are needed to be successful on the SAT. We plan to utilize her in coaching our son with his college essays also. We found her to be well qualified and experienced. She turned out to be the right tutor for our son. Thank you Dr. Brunda!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Critical reading is a prerequisite to critical writing. My experience teaching college writing courses has prepared me to guide students through the process of analysis and inference that is crucial to understanding not only what a text says but also what a subtext is and what it says.
SAT essays require the student to write a persuasive essay by make a valid argument. This is done by writing an essay with a well thought out introduction which includes the argument, a body which includes examples that back up the argument, and a conclusion that ties it all together.
I will help the student formulate their arguments, organize the essay and guide them through the critical writing process.
