About A.J.

Writing well is the key to success in school and beyond. Whether you’re aiming for better grades in school, higher scores on standardized tests, college application essays that stand out, or better results in the workplace, improving your writing is the key to achieving those goals.

Despite the importance of writing well, most students are taught very little about how to do it. Their knowledge of grammar is minimal; their vocabularies are poor. They have little experience in writing clearly-structured essays. As a tutor, my goal is not only to help students with their current classes and assignments, but to give students a better understanding of the techniques and rules that will improve their writing for the rest of their lives.

Finding the right tutor to help you achieve your goals can be challenging. Just as every student has a unique set of strengths and weaknesses, every tutor has a different style and approach. My approach is to discuss the student’s needs, identify the areas that a student needs to work on, and customize a plan that will not only address those weaknesses, but also build on areas of strength. To create an effective plan, I carefully choose materials that the student will find engaging. Some students like humor; some like sports or pop culture or some other topic. I tailor my tutoring to a student’s interests in order to bolster the student’s motivation and enjoyment. My extensive knowledge of language arts materials allows me to provide a customized tutoring experience for you or your child, one that can produce dramatic results in a very short time.

To fully understand my approach to tutoring, it helps to know a bit about my background. Writing is in my blood. I come from a family of writers--biographers, poets, novelists, historians and journalists. I grew up surrounded by books and writers. This instilled an enduring love of language and its beauty, complexity and precision. While living in Canada, I received degrees in Economics and Law. I practiced law in Canada and the US, before switching career tracks and receiving a Master's in Journalism from Columbia University.

Many years later I discovered my second passion--education. The education of my two children (currently in grades 5 and 10) has been my top priority since they were born. A tireless researcher, I looked into every one of the schools in my area, both public and private, and chose the best school that I could find. For a while I was satisfied, but over the years I became increasingly frustrated until one day I reluctantly realized that if I wanted my children to get an education that was a perfect fit, I would have to do it myself. That’s how I became a home educator. I’ve been homeschooling my older child for the past seven years with tremendous success. Through my years of experience as a home educator, I’ve become an expert in educational resources. I’m frequently called on to provide teachers with recommendations for curricular resources. I also advise parents on enrichment materials and activities. As a natural outgrowth of my interest in schools, education and writing, I started editing students’ essays for both college and high school applications. Application essays require a type of writing that is foreign to most students and can be particularly stressful, so I find it very satisfying to be able to help students to show their true talents and personalities.

I hope that this explanation gives you a general idea about how I approach tutoring. Of course every student is unique, and I would be happy to discuss your particular needs. I prepare thoroughly for every tutoring session and will work with you to come up with the most cost-effective ways to achieve your goals. Please feel free to contact me with any questions that you may have.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

There are three primary components to college counseling: advising students and their parents on which colleges to consider and apply to, assisting them with their application essays, and ensuring that students take (and score well) on the appropriate standardized tests.

With regard to selecting the target schools, the first step is for students to think about what type of college they're looking for (large or small, urban or rural, university or liberal arts college, required courses, etc. . .). I encourage students to cast a wide net and to look at schools outside of their stated wish list, as well. After I have a good idea of what a student needs and wants in a college, we move on to researching schools. I advise students against relying too heavily on the numerous rankings and lists. The rankings are overly simplistic and often say more about a college success in marketing than they do about the education they offer.

With regard to the applications themselves, the student needs to take charge of ensuring that all necessary steps are taken to complete every application, but it helps to provide them with checklists to track their progress. The more stressful and difficult part of the application process is writing the application essays. This is where I really excel. I have a very good understanding of what colleges are looking for and how each student can present himself or herself in a way that will attract the attention of the admissions officers. I find it easy to pick out the details in a student's background or experience that can be turned into a successful essay. Once students have drafts of their essays, I provide detailed feedback.

With regard to standardized tests, the biggest challenge is in preparing students for the tests so that they obtain the highest score possible. For any writing or verbal skill assessments, I would be able to provide tutoring myself (once I complete the qualification tests for SAT and ACT prep tutoring). I can also direct students to a variety of resources for either self-study or test preparation tutoring (there are numerous tutors on WyzAnt for any subject they require).

My qualifications to provide college counseling come from a variety of experiences. I have achieved extremely high marks in every standardized test that I've ever taken. This includes the SSAT, SAT, LSAT and GRE. I coached my older child to a 700 in Verbal and a 750 in Writing on the SAT while she was in 6th grade. I have attended numerous online seminars on academic topics and preparing for college. I have helped middle school students at an independent school to prepare for their high school admissions interviews. I have advised students on their college application essays. Perhaps most important, I'm a compulsive researcher who loves the challenge of finding the perfect school or resource to meet that client's individual needs.
