Writing well is the key to success in school and beyond. Whether you’re aiming for better grades in school, higher scores on standardized tests, college application essays that stand out, or better results in the workplace, improving your writing is the key to achieving those goals.

Despite the importance of writing well, most students are taught very little about how to do it. Their knowledge of grammar is minimal; their vocabularies are poor. They have little experience in writing clearly-structured essays. As a tutor, my goal is not only to help students with their current classes and assignments, but to give students a better understanding of the techniques and rules that will improve their writing for the rest of their lives.

Finding the right tutor to help you achieve your goals can be challenging. Just as every student has a unique set of strengths and weaknesses, every tutor has a different style and approach. My approach is to discuss the student’s needs, identify the areas that a student needs to work on, and customize a plan that will not only address those weaknesses, but also build on areas of strength. To create an effective plan, I carefully choose materials that the student will find engaging. Some students like humor; some like sports or pop culture or some other topic. I tailor my tutoring to a student’s interests in order to bolster the student’s motivation and enjoyment. My extensive knowledge of language arts materials allows me to provide a customized tutoring experience for you or your child, one that can produce dramatic results in a very short time.

To fully understand my approach to tutoring, it helps to know a bit about my background. Writing is in my blood. I come from a family of writers--biographers, poets, novelists, historians and journalists. I grew up surrounded by books and writers. My students have been admitted to Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Amherst, and Williams, as well as many other fine colleges. I have also advised students applying to selective high schools and a wide variety of graduate and professional schools. I can assist students at every stage of the application process, but the majority of my time is devoted to helping students with the part that they usually find the most difficult—writing the application essays. While the application essays can be a huge challenge to write, they are the student’s best opportunity to make his or her application come to life. To stand out in the crowded field of college applicants, students need to write essays that effectively showcase their unique personalities and accomplishments.
