Bio

I began tutoring when I was in high school. I was a member of the math honor society, Mu Alpha Theta, and found that helping other students with math was a very rewarding experience. Later, when I was in college at Columbia University, I began to share my knowledge of physics. I have since taught physics and astronomy at the college level and tutored in basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and SAT prep. I began tutoring when I was in high school. I was a member of the math honor society, Mu Alpha Theta, and found that helping other students with math was a very rewarding experience. Later, when I was in college at Columbia University, I began to share my knowledge of physics. I have since taught physics and astronomy at the college level and tutored in basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, chemistry, physics, astronomy, and SAT prep. In addition, I have earned a master's degree in educational psychology, as well as a graduate certificate in educational technology, from Rutgers University. This training has taught me how to most effectively teach students so that they develop not only a deep understanding of a particular subject, but also a stronger set of self-directed learning skills.

While I enjoy the classroom, I find that working with students one-on-one is the most effective way to help them learn. One of the greatest feelings is when I am able to help a student to experience one of those "light bulb" moments, when they finally, really get it. And then to watch them take it and run... It is one of my favorite things.

I started tutoring algebra when I was in high school. Later, I worked for a major tutoring company and found that I still really enjoyed helping students get past the difficulties that they have with the subject. It is my favorite subject to teach because there are so many ways to explain each concept. It's just a matter of finding the right explanation for each student.

Astronomy

I earned a bachelor of science degree in astronomy from Columbia University. Since then, I have taught college level astronomy courses and have also designed astronomy programs for a planetarium. Students are often not prepared for the amount of math involved in astronomy. However, with a little help, they can learn to love the subject and all that it involves.

Amazing tutor!

Maria has been outstanding in all ways. She is very professional and reliable, sessions are always on time. She is patient, knowledgable and has excellent rapport with my child. She is helping her with math for her SAT's. Maria had a guide book ready for my daughter at the first session. We started the sessions in our home and due to scheduling switched to the Wyzant video conference which worked out wonderful. If you are looking for an awesome tutor for your child Maria is the perfect choice in every way!

Patient & Understanding

I am a special case, and Maria was patient and understanding. I will need a tutor as I move forward, and I will be using Maria when the time comes. I didn't get a chance to fully utilize Maria and this silly review form is demanding I lay down at least 160 characters; if I didn't have such a good feeling about Maria and I didn't want to leave her a glowing review, I would have closed this form the first time it asked I type more than wnted to say. Use Maria, she rocks! .
