Hi, I'm Matthew Schiff, a math tutor based in Plainfield, NJ. I believe learning is a personal and often non-linear journey, where mistakes are essential to growth - not detours. I create a supportive, challenging environment where students feel safe to engage in the “messy process” of learning.
I tutor high school subjects including Pre-Calculus, Advanced Algebra II, Algebra, and Geometry, as well as college-level Calculus and Discrete Math. I also offer specialized support for the SAT Math and Praxis Mathematics (5165) exams. My academic background includes a Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction - Mathematics Education (4.0 GPA, University of Texas at Arlington) and a B.A. in Secondary Mathematics Education (cum laude, 3.8 GPA, University of Delaware).
With experience as a high school math teacher, I emphasize clear expectations, mutual respect, and differentiated instruction. I believe students should have choice in how they learn. Whether through guided instruction, peer collaboration, EdPuzzle, or DeltaMath, I adapt my methods to meet each student’s needs. My student-centered approach, rooted in William Glasser’s Choice Theory, builds engagement and ownership.
To support independent learning, I’ve developed “Schiff’s-Notes,” a collection of lesson summaries and practice problems. I also use Desmos, EdPuzzle, and DeltaMath to make learning interactive and feedback immediate.
My goal is not just to teach math, but to help students build confidence, critical thinking, and resilience - skills that extend far beyond the classroom. In my classroom, students have shown over 70% growth on state assessments. As a Praxis Math tutor, I’ve helped future educators boost scores by 50% in just 8 weeks.
If you're ready to master math and enjoy the journey, I’d love to help.
