My name is Caroline, and I did my undergraduate degree at Barnard College of Columbia University. I recently finished studying at Texas A&M for my Master's degree in Nautical Archaeology. I have been tutoring students in history and Latin for 10 years, as well as editing English essays. My strengths in history are Ancient, American and European – I received a five on the AP US History exam, and will gladly help high school students prepare for it. In English, I excel at teaching grammar and analysis of literature. I have been learning Latin since sixth grade and have kept up with it even into my graduate years.

I graduated with a double major in English and Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology and a minor in Ancient History.

In order to help your child succeed, there must be constant reinforcement of what they are learning in class in the home as well. To that end, the best schedule would be for you child to have two one-hour sessions with me per-week, preferably one during the week to help with homework and immediate demands, and one during the weekend to go over everything they've learnt in class and cement that in their heads. While one hour a week is certainly do-able, it is not the best method to help your child succeed, and it is my job to give all students their best chance!

I’m currently working as a Latin teacher at a private school. That means I’m connected to and exchanging ideas with students both middle school and high school age every day. This puts me in a better position to help them overcome their fears about testing, essay writing, and reading.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Anthropology

Anthropology

I graduated as an Anthropology Major at Columbia University with a Specialization in Archaeology. I am capable of teaching basic theory, covering the biggest names in Ethnology and Ethnography. This encompasses many iterations of Anthropological study from the androcentric Westernized theories of Lewis Henry Morgan and Bronislaw Maliknowski, to the more recent theories of anthropologists such as Elizabeth Povinelli, attempting to examine issues from an unbiased perspective.
Classics

Classics

I graduated with a B.A. in Classical archaeology from Barnard College of Columbia University. As a Latin student, I have gained much familiarity with the Classical World, not only in Roman history but Greek as well. My areas of strength are the Roman Golden Age of writing and poetry, the Emperors of Rome following Augustus (the Julio-Claudian Dynasty and the Flavians in particular), as well as a general overview of Roman Architectural styles.
European History

European History

I have quite a bit of experience with European History, not only from several college courses but also a personal connection and interest in Europe from extensive traveling on the continent.
Grammar

Grammar

While Grammar is an intrinsic and necessary part of any spoken language, there is more to it than just boring, cut and dry rules that tell students how to write. After learning to follow grammar rules, and understanding when to bend them, an aural interpretation of correct writing reveals a more fluid and lyrical prose than before. It is a knowledge of grammar that allows sentences to flow rather than to stutter.
Latin

Latin

As I started learning Latin in 6th grade, this will be my seventeenth year of Latin experience, in both an academic and archeological setting. I am also currently working as a Latin teacher for high school students.
Literature

Literature

There is the famous saying "A picture is worth a thousand words". I take issue with this statement: it is the words that create the picture, drawing together like the dots in a Pointillist work of art. Most students find English literature difficult because they have not yet stepped back, and discovered the whole picture. It is a tutor's job to teach students how to follow the flow of a story from metaphorical dot to dot, until they are ready to take that step away and regard the whole work of art all by themselves.
Reading

Reading

Reading does not have to be a horrible chore – it should be a delight, with each book acting as a portal to another life. If an author writes with purpose, so should we read with the same dedication. I have always seen stories as a chance to perceive the world in a more beautiful, more exciting, or even more terrible way than it is in reality. It is the ability to tap into the emotions caused by these that make reading worthwhile, an ability that I hope to spread to others who have not had the chance to experience it.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

Despite the daunting task approaching, SAT prep is very manageable if you start early. Even for students who have learned English as a second language, or simply have different academic strengths, there are tricks that I can teach you to buoy your grade. As a high school student I took the SAT twice, and received an 800 on the reading section both times. I would love to help your student gain the confidence to do well on this section of the SAT.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Many people vastly underestimate the importance of a nuanced vocabulary. With a thesaurus built into Word and other writing software, why should we need to know more than the basics? Vocabulary is the basis of all academic success, even in math at the higher levels. The wider a range of words students have to chose from, the greater their potential. An excellent essay in any discipline only emerges when a student has a full understanding of the minute differences between words with similar meanings, but widely ranging historical and intellectual implications.
Writing

Writing

Writing is a hard subject to define. It is the sum of grammar, vocabulary, and literary imagination. It is the quality of writing that makes a paper worth reading, and makes all the difference between a B and an A grade.
