I'm a trans, nonbinary educator and debate coach who earned a Master's degree in the History of Science from Oregon State University in 2019. After I graduated cum laude from Franklin and Marshall College with a Bachelor's degree in History and Religious Studies, I continued to pursue my passion for research and writing through graduate studies. While earning my MA, I developed teaching and tutoring skills through the university classroom and fostered a love of learning in my students through engaging lectures, frequent class discussions, fun review sessions, and open office hours. I've learned that a relaxed and exploratory environment allows students to develop analytical skills that they can apply in their own writing, research, and classwork. I strive to make my students comfortable with and excited about large projects like research papers. I excel in developing personalized strategies to meet a student's specific needs. More than anything, I aim to teach students how to continue improving and teaching themselves.

Philosophy

Philosophy

I graduated from Oregon State University's History and Philosophy of Science program in December 2019 with a 3.93 GPA. My research focused on the History of Medicine and the ethics of experimentation in Germany between 1900 and 1933. I have received significant grant support for my research, presented my work at professional conferences around the country, and helped my students incorporate this knowledge into their own written historical work. I have worked as an educator for almost 3 years in formal classroom settings, informal student driven workshops, and online tutoring sessions.

I have been a member of the National Speech and Debate Association since 2009. In high school, I competed in the categories Duo Interpretation, Oral Interpretation, and Lincoln-Douglas Debate and was able to earn a slot in the national tournament three out of 4 years. During college, I spent my weekends coaching the Phillipsburg High School Speech and Debate team and working as a hired freelance judge at major NSDA tournaments (The Princeton Classic, University of Pennsylvania Tournament, etc.). I have experience with all high school speech and debate categories including but not limited to: Original Oratory, Oral Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, and Congressional Debate.

During my time as a college level educator I have developed a unique research and writing methodology to assist my students. The following description comes from a syllabus I designed for students who want a clear, specific breakdown of the entire research and writing process. This extremely individualized course is designed for students from high school to graduate school and can be used as a template for work in the humanities and social sciences. Research Paper and Writing Course Description: This course is designed for students who need additional assistance with their academic research and writing skills. During this learning program, students will develop research, analytical, organizational, and writing skills to produce an 8-30-page term paper. The 4-week program is an accelerated approach for students who are already in a time crunch and are seeking additional guidance on the writing and research process. Over 4 weeks, we will have 5 separate 3-hour lessons which teach students to develop a research question, choose strong primary and secondary sources, construct an argumentative thesis statement, organize an argument, formulate a writing outline, write an introductory statement, draft the paper, and then edit and proofread the final copy. The 10-week course is perfect for students who are seeking a more relaxed timeline or are pursuing upper level and graduate research. Over 10 weeks, we will have 10 2-hour sessions which allow us to manage larger projects, work with source material in foreign languages, and get through an additional round or two of edits.

Big help to my son

My son did not do well for his first tournament and was very struggled and frustrated, so I scheduled some lessons with Coach D to help him, after 6 lessons, my son went to his second tournament and won a medal which boosted his confidence, thanks a lot to Coach D for his help!

We have been regularly using DC’s kind assistance over the last two years. Generally with speech and debate, we may have a one to four classes a month depending on our sons schedule, holidays, and upcoming debate tournaments. I think the key has been consistency certainly. My son started extemp speaking in February 2022, and he qualified to nationals last year and with greater ease qualified to nationals this year. He is also able to go to the TOC this year. I think frequent practice with the expertise of DC who knows the circuit well has made all of the difference. These are certainly very teachable skills. But DC has always been prompt, helpful, and given our son the advice he needs to understand and be successful in this activity.
