I have several college students that I tutor in the criminal justice area. I am familiar with all types of crime, punishment, jail systems and the various studies that track criminal conduct and prosecution. Most recently I assisted a student with a paper about Fire and Arson and what would cause someone to become an arsonist or a serial arsonist. Much of the material requires careful reading and evaluation by the student so I can assist them to understand what they need to know for their class discussion, tests and papers.

I have a BA/Journalism and am a published author. Additionally, a certified substitute teacher, I currently tutor college level students. My personality, experience, and love of my students of any age make me a great tutor. I can teach students with special needs and those that do not speak English as a first language. I can relate to everyone and make the subjects interesting and fun while learning. Since I am a mother of two grown children, I know the challenges and rewards that come with learning and make it my mission to encourage and praise students. My love of learning is lifelong and I keep current with all types of activity, including reading, writing, and current events.

There are so many books that are classics and should always have a place in our world. They stand the test of time and are well written in addition to an example of great writing. I love to read and have many books in my home; I keep them to reread and consider them a comfort. A real book will never take the place of a computer in my opinion.

Most important is the finished format of the written report, proposal or email. Misspelled words or improper grammar is not a good thing and does not appear professional. My expertise in this area is outstanding given my experience and affinity for perfection in the written word as it applies to the end result

Reading is the basis for all we do in life. No matter what we need to read, we need to know how. I am a lover of reading; ever since I can recall I have read anything and everything that interests me. Examining content is important while reading and I can show you how.

SAT reading prep is important to the student because they have to know how to read and comprehend the subject matter in order to answer the questions. I have reading comp exercises I provide to the student to help them study and succeed for the SAT reading portion.

Writing is the basis for all things we do whether we realize it or not. Good writing is essential, especially in the technology age; emails, texts, etc. are a fast way to communicate and in the business world it is professional and needed to have good writing skills. I can help your child learn to write and write well. I am a published author and have experience with writing of all types, especially my college students, from research papers to fiction to thesis statements. I also have experience with elementary students and teaching them how to write.
Study Skills

Study Skills

I have helped college students with study skills for several years. I teach them how to take notes in class, how to use those notes to study for an exam and how to glean important subject information from their textbook. Study skills are the key to preparing and mastering the course and the test. I help my students realize that the key to great study skills is notetaking as well as paying close attention to what is being said in class. I also tell my students that partnering with another student to study can also help them master the material.

I believe the more words one knows how to use properly, the more well-rounded one becomes. I still use the old fashioned dictionary in addition to spell check because sometimes I learn a new word or two.

Writing

As a writer for most of my life, I know how words work together for the best outcome. I am a published author with articles in Cat Fancy Magazine, a local newspaper, magazine and press releases. I love to write. I am passionate about the written word and how to help students master the skill. Writing is important to communicate whether it is via email or a written report or proposal. Great writing will never go out of style!

I was looking for a tutor to help my 5-year old grandson who is on the spectrum with reading. My grandson enjoys working with Joan. He is showing improvement and we are very happy with the services Joan is providing.
