About Alan

Ivy League Educated tutor located in Bergen County (NJ) specializing in:

+HIGH IMPACT WRITING INSTRUCTION for 2nd - 8th Grade Students who want to significantly improve their ability to express their ideas and write syntactically varied sentences which connect and express ideas powerfully. This instruction will be embedded within your child's school assignments to teach him/her to think more critically and express ideas in a more sophisticated manner.

+RESEARCH BASED READING INSTRUCTION (Orton-Gillingham based) for 1st and 2nd graders who are significantly below grade level expectations. This method helps your 1st/2nd grader integrate and understand the rules of READING, WRITING, and SPELLING to approach and exceed grade level proficiency. Please note, this is not a quick fix method but requires a minimum 4-6 month commitment on your part (1x per week).

About Alan
Alan is a dually Certified General Ed(K-8) and Special Ed teacher (NJ and MD). Trained in the Orton-Gillingham reading intervention method, Teachers' College Reading Workshop method. Alan works with his students to set short-term goals along a continuum of foundational to rigorous skills. Kids enjoy working with Alan because he incorporates multi-sensory activities and games along with very focused skill building activities. Students learn the skills and are also able to self-monitor their reading/writing/spelling and explain the "whys" of the skills they retain.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught 5th grade for 2 years in an inclusion classroom, 4th grade for 1 year, and 1st grade for 2 years. I taught all of the subjects--Reading, Writing, Math and Science.

Hebrew

I would like to be listed as a Hebrew tutor. I took 1 year of college Hebrew, then followed it up with three years of intensive Jewish studies in Hebrew. This past summer, I passed the Level IV Ulpan at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This level is the completion of the grammar proficiency. I speak every day in Hebrew and can converse easily.

Reading

Trained in Orton-Gillingham and the Reading/Writing Workshop of Teachers College, I help students build skills so they can become more active and thinking readers and thinkers, and be able to put their ideas on paper, support them, and elaborate them.

Religion

I have studied Judaic studies for the past 25 years, and have run a small Congregational School for the past three years. My expertise includes teaching Bible, Hebrew, Jewish values, rituals, Holidays, and other Judaic subjects to Jews.

Special Needs

I am a NJ and MD State Certified Special Education K-12 Teacher. I have taught 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th grade students with a range of disabilities in inclusion, and self-contained classrooms. I utilize Orton-Gillingham, and Reading/Writing Workshop methodologies in Reading, Writing and Spelling instruction. I have collaborated with Math Specialists to develop a high impact strategy approach to help students build confidence in Math Problem Solving.

Writing

I have helped talented writers, English language learners, students with disabilities, and regular Janes set short term goals to learn rehearsal, planning, organizational, and high impact sentence utilization and word choice skills to make their writing powerful.

Great Tutor

Alan is very attentive and has great strategy for building reading comprehension. He has only had 2 lessons with my son but I already see improvement in his confidence. My son looks forward to the sessions now. Very grateful that I found him.
