Learning has always been a fascination to me regardless of subject area and has driven me towards education.

My passion for the English language drives my teaching in each of the areas. As an English major and a Linguistics minor, I have worked with language from a number of different perspectives. Learning has always been a fascination to me regardless of subject area and has driven me towards education.

My passion for the English language drives my teaching in each of the areas. As an English major and a Linguistics minor, I have worked with language from a number of different perspectives. In the past year of teaching I have developed in depth lessons on constructing an essay and developing a creative writing as well.

My approach to tutoring, like that of my teaching, seeks to make an experience of learning, reading, or writing. I find that by creating an experience though the material leads to better retention and allows the student to forget that we are actually learning. Upon meeting the student and their guardians we can discuss best practices to fit individual needs, as well as strengths to advance their student to success.

If you have any questions, contact me and I will respond within 24 hours! Similarly if you have a specific subject or focus, I am a fast learner and I'm not afraid to step outside my comfort zone to help a student. Feel free to contact me to find out more information or to schedule lessons.

Approved Subjects

English

English

I am qualified to tutor in English because I have completed my degree in English Secondary Education at TCNJ. English has always been a passion of mine and as a teacher I seek to make it come to life for the reader. During my student teaching I sought to make the text an experience rather than words on a page though activities and student focused instruction. Through my passion and focus on the subject, I can use different methods to aid students in the areas they struggle.
Literature

Literature

As an English major at TCNJ, I have read and analyzed literature from all different realms. From as ancient texts to post modernist theories, literature exemplifies the connections to the human experience as only stories can. As my primary subject, I have learned to look into literature and derive meaning that allows it to connect to us all. I am able to tutor this subject because I have taken literature based classes in conjunction with my education classes that help connect the literature to the student. Finally in my student teaching, I have successfully taught a number of different units of literature to both high school and middle school levels.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Through my teaching writing classes, I have come to have a love for proofreading and the impact it can make on a piece of writing. Similarly, in my campus job in the athletic department I am in charge of proofreading and editing sports programs, online articles, and special event pieces for the college. As one of my main strengths, I can aid students towards finding ways to make editing entertaining as well as constructive in their writing.
Reading

Reading

I am able to tutor in reading skills because I am able to both analyze student's needs and guide students towards differentiated reading methods. Through determining if reading issues are derived from comprehension, vocabulary, syntax or even larger educational difficulties, I can show students methods to meaning in reading. Similarly there are a number of strategies to aid students in both PARCC and SAT reading that can aid student scores and comprehension overall.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I am able to tutor vocabulary because of my experience in both Latin and Linguistics. Through using Greek and Latin roots students will be able to see the connections to meanings and definitions to build their vocabulary skills. Similarly through my linguistics background we can use vocabulary to tap into elements of grammar to enhance a student's overall writing. Similarly as a student who has previously struggled with vocabulary, I am able to show students methods to memorization and techniques that will aid long term memory.
Writing

Writing

I am able to teach writing because I have experience not only as a writer who struggled, but also as a student teacher who has seen and worked through struggles of writing in class. In my teaching writing course, we developed plans and methods to teaching writing in an encouraging and effective way. Touching on both writers workshop style as well as traditional, I am able to develop and enhance a student's writing through one on one discussion and process development.
