About Mike

I studied Mechanical Engineering at The College of New Jersey (highly ranked school, see US News or Forbes rankings) and conquered most math subjects along the way. Teaching is a love of mine, and I have tutored on and off since I was in high school. My greatest teaching strength is my ability to simplify concepts so that they are easier to learn and understand. I am currently in my third year of teaching, two years of Algebra 1 in Orlando, and this year I am teaching 7th grade in Stuart. Coaching sports teams has also aided my growth as a tutor, showing me some things that typically are not learned in the classroom, but apply directly nonetheless. Also, I have some unique coaching experience in an unconventional field. I am an extremely high level poker player and have coached many students, teaching them how to make a better living for themselves. Not only do I teach strategy and math, but I ascertain underlying factors in performance such as how they deal with pressure. These outside factors can prove to be vitally important to success in testing, and any situation someone feels pressure or resistance in.

In summation, I am available to tutor all math subjects (and some science) middle school through college, and would be happy to throw a football around or play some cards to wind down after a session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

My score on ACT Math was 28 (92nd percentile).

ACT Science

I excelled in Honors and AP Science classes in high school, which was reflected in my ACT Science score of 35 (99th percentile).

Algebra 1

For the past two years I taught Algebra 1 in a high school, and am confident I can teach anyone.

Algebra 2

I excelled in Honors Algebra II in high school, and continued using the material in Calculus, and in earning my degree in Engineering. My knowledge of Algebra II is reflected in my standardized math test scores.

Baseball

I played baseball from Tee Ball through varsity in high school. I played year-round in high school on traveling teams, and attended many camps and clinics. My specialty is pitching, as I pitched every year I played and threw 85 MPH with pinpoint control.

Basketball

I played organized basketball through high school, and have played recreationally and competitively since. I also study the NBA to the point where I am able to make money by playing daily fantasy games.

Calculus

In high school I took AP calculus AB, and passed the AP test. In college, I took higher level calculus through Calculus III en route to my Engineering degree.

Economics

I have a degree in Engineering Management, which is basically an engineering degree with a business minor. This included multiple economics courses.

Elementary Math

Elementary math is comprised of the basic building blocks of mathematics, which I am extremely strong in. Typically students struggling with this subject simply need further explanation and more repetition. My abilities to articulate my thoughts precisely, explain things clearly, and relate to my student's knowledge base makes me a strong tutor for elementary math.

Finite Math

I graduated from The College of New Jersey with a degree in Engineering Management, where the curriculum included differential equations, statistics, calculus 3, and many other math intensive classes. In high school I also passed the SAT Math Subject Test, and scored in the 91st percentile in the basic SAT math section.

Geometry

I excelled in Honors Geometry in high school. The principles learned in the class were necessary to continue doing well in Trigonometry, and later in earning my Engineering degree through classes such as Dynamics and Strength of Materials.

Microsoft Word

I have been using Microsoft Word regularly since I was in middle school for everything from essays to technical engineering reports.

Poker

I have been a professional poker player since I graduated college in 2009. I excel in No-limit Texas Hold'Em in both live (casino) and online settings. Also, I have coached multiple students to help them make more money from poker. The main concept that students typically need coaching in is the combinatorics behind assigning ranges to your opponents so that they can understand how often a bet should work, or how often an opponent's bet should be called/raised/folded against.

Prealgebra

I have taught Algebra 1 for the past two years, and Prealgebra is simply the collection of fundamental concepts of Algebra.

Precalculus

I excelled in all honors and AP math classes in high school through AP Calculus AB. This enabled me to place in the 91st percentile in SAT math, and score a 710 (87th percentile) on the SAT II math subject test. The use of math continued through getting my degree in Engineering.

SAT Math

I scored in the 91st percentile on the SAT math section, and a 710 on the SAT II math subject test (87th percentile).

SAT Reading

I scored in the 92nd percentile on the SAT verbal section, and also took honors English throughout high school.

Statistics

I excelled in AP Statistics in high school, and went on to do very well on the AP exam. Later, on the way to earning my degree, I completed a higher level statistics course.

Trigonometry

I excelled in all honors and AP maths in high school, through AP Calc AB. My math education continued in college, where I earned a degree in Engineering Management, putting my math fundamentals to use daily. This is also reflected in my standardized test scores on the SAT (92nd percentile), SAT II Math Subject Test (87th percentile), and ACT Math (92nd percentile).

Volleyball

I have played volleyball since 2008 at many levels of competition in both indoor (6-man teams) and beach (doubles). I can coach all fundamentals and mechanics as well as formations. When I was forced to sit out for an indoor season, I coached my team to a championship in a competitive league that we had no business winning.

Excellent Tutor

Mike did a great job tutoring my granddaughter and is helping her to prepare for her SAT test. Knowledgeable and able to explain how to solve problems in a way that was easy for her to comprehend and use to solve new problems.
