Hi, and thanks for checking out my profile! I am an author and former elementary school teacher who loves helping students achieve their best. I spent a year teaching sixth-grade math and language arts at an elementary/middle school in Virginia. I also taught a college-level graphic design course at the University of Maryland, and an English as a Second Language class through a volunteer program. I’m currently serving as a one-to-one instructional aide at a local elementary school.
Through my teaching experience, I learned that one-on-one tutoring makes a huge difference in a student's progress, and I love having the opportunity to help students grow. My favorite tutoring experience was working with an 8-year-old boy who was struggling with reading and scoring in the 20s and 30s on his tests. I designed a program for him that included fun games in addition to his regular school work to help him stay engaged and feel encouraged. After just a few months, he was scoring 90 percent and above on his reading tests, and I was so proud of our work together.
My focus areas are language arts (reading and writing) and math, and I’m open to working with students in kindergarten through sixth grade. I love including games and puzzles in my tutoring and do my best to help students enjoy our time together! I also make sure to give a lot of positive reinforcement so students can build their confidence, which is an important part of learning. I'd like to think that I have a lot of patience as well -- improving your skills requires it!
A little about me personally: my hobbies include writing, cooking, watching sports, and making handmade jewelry. If you have any questions for me, please don’t hesitate to ask. I'm also open to a free consultation if you've never tried tutoring before and are feeling apprehensive. Thanks for your time, and I look forward to speaking with you!
