[Who is Joe?]
I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and I am a native Japanese speaker. I live in the U.S. now.
I've been teaching for many years, and I focus on:
1. Travel-focused Japanese
2. Casual and/or formal conversation (from anime to business)
3. Exam prep (JLPT: N5 to N1, school exams, etc.)
[Experience]
In Japan, I taught Japanese to international students from a variety of universities. Through MySensei, I taught a wide range of learners, including casual learners, students, and business professionals. In the U.S., I tutored at the CLAC and as a freelancer. For example, I helped one student improve from an F to a B+, and I worked with another student who had failed the JLPT N1 multiple times and finally passed after our sessions.
[Teaching Style]
My sessions use a Japanese study style with a progressive structure (learn once, then reuse and extend it). I also teach how native speakers actually use each expression, beyond what standard textbooks say.
For example:
Textbook Japanese
?
Resutoran ni ikitai desu ka → Do you want to go to a restaurant?
Natural Japanese
Gohan tabe ni ikanai → Wanna grab food?
Both are correct, but the second feels more real. Most teachers stop at the textbook version. I help you speak the way people actually do.
I also offer study advising for school and efficient skill learning. I used to be a struggling student and later graduated with GPAs of 4.0 and 3.98, and I share practical ways to study efficiently. You can use this for classes, self study, or together with your Japanese lessons.
(Looking forward to seeing you in our lesson)
