I was born in Guyana, South America and received my undergraduate degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Guyana. During college, I worked with the internationally renowned Canadian volunteer organization, Youth Challenge International as the Assistant Project Director; Logistic and Fundraising. After college, I worked with Matthew’s Associates, an environmental consultancy group, conducting environmental impact assessments for the Government of Guyana. In 2001 I immigrated to the United States after living briefly in Canada. I gained my Master's Degree in Urban Affairs and Planning, with honors, from Hunter College, CUNY. As a research associate with the Research Foundation, Hunter College, I worked on a research project funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation; "Expanding Activity Space: Engaging Low-Income Populations in the Visualization of Travel Behavior and Mobility Barriers." It resulted in a web transportation mapping tool.
I am currently a Ph.D. Candidate in the joint Urban Systems program at the College of Architecture and Design, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Rutgers University’s Graduate Center. My research interests coalesce around some of the most enduring themes of urban scholarship: the intersections of poverty, race, and class; and the physical and socio-political impacts and consequences of gentrification in American cities. I am currently the Director of Operations at New York City's largest public healthcare union; Local 420, District Council 37, AFSCME. In the spring of 2018, I will begin my Adjunct professor role at Queens College (The City University of New York), teaching The Introduction to Urban Studies 101 and Graduate Urban Studies Research methods 750 courses. I currently serve as a Commissioner on the Newark Environmental Commission and is a founding Board Member and Director of Development for Arts Culture and Community Activism Institute of Ivy Hill.
