Hi. I’m Fred, a Northwestern University graduate with a BA in History and extensive coursework in English. Although I’ve long been interested in history and current events, my passion truly developed in college, where inspiring professors made the subject come alive. Their enthusiasm and accessibility shaped my own approach: I strive to make learning engaging, dynamic, and supportive for every student.
I have over eight years and 2,000 hours of tutoring experience, working with students from 1st grade through college freshmen, most commonly in grades 6–8. I specialize in English Language Arts and History, with a focus on reading comprehension and all forms of writing. I also have a strong track record successfully preparing students for the ISEE and SSAT.
My teaching style emphasizes interactive, well-structured lessons that encourage participation and build confidence. I bring creativity into sessions whenever possible—for example, incorporating role-playing activities to help students connect with historical figures and ideas. Previously, I worked as a publisher, where I developed educational materials and classroom exercises centered on notable Americans, further strengthening my ability to design engaging content.
In addition to tutoring, I have one year of ESL experience helping an adult learner improve grammar, vocabulary, and speaking confidence. I also spent five years as a reading assistant at a local elementary school, supporting students with diction and comprehension.
I’m certified by the National Tutoring Association, and I earned an ETS Recognition of Excellence after scoring in the top 15% on the Praxis Social Studies: Content Knowledge exam.
I’m responsive, open to feedback, and committed to supporting both students and parents. Feel free to reach out with questions or to schedule a lesson. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

My primary focus during college was on American History. My knowledge of American History has been greatly enhanced by my 30+ years working for the publisher of Who's Who in America and Who Was Who in America With World Notables as a Researcher, Editor-in-Chief, and Publisher. Our mission has always been to chronicle the lives of the most influential people in the United States, from both a current and a historical perspective. I was able to apply that mission when I created classroom exercises to teach students about famous people from the past and present.
English

English

I had significant English course work in college with a focus on American and English literature and poetry from all periods. As an Editor at a publishing company for over 30 years, I have been deeply involved in helping hundreds of employees with the practical and correct usage of English grammar, and with all forms of writing, ranging from biographical/persuasive essays to expository essays. My chief responsibility as a reading assistant was to help young ESL students with their diction, comprehension, and overall acclamation to the English language. I was able to provide significant help by being very patient and making the material enjoyable for the students. I currently tutor an adult student in English as a Second Language.
ISEE

ISEE

I have tutored multiple students across all levels of the ISEE test. Several of my students took the test twice or three times, and each time I worked with the student he/she showed substantial improvement. My guiding principle is to make use of multiple print and online sources to improve vocabulary acquisition and comprehension.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a result of my substantial coursework in English at Northwestern University, coupled with my lifelong love of reading, I have built and maintained a very strong vocabulary. My experience as an ESL tutor has given me great tools to teach vocabulary and reading in a fun, engaging way. My work experience as an Editor-in-Chief at a publishing company allowed me to further broaden both my vocabulary and to instruct my staff on the proper (and sometimes different) use of vocabulary when writing memos, emails, and biographical essays.
World History

World History

Recently I have bolstered my significant World and European History coursework in college by taking an online course focusing on Modern World History from 1760 onward.
Writing

Writing

I excelled in all types of writing in all my classes in college, ranging from History to English to Political Science. My writing experience has been enhanced even further as a longtime editor and publisher, breaking down into three general areas: I have written countless biographical essays about famous Americans; I have written many instruction and training manuals for employees; and I have taught innumerable employees about how to write a narrative, a descriptive piece, an expository piece, and a persuasive argument.
