Aloha! My name is Stephanie, and I offer two skillsets when it comes to tutoring: Biology/Earth science content and Writing/Speaking assignments across all disciplines.
During my undergraduate studies at Mount Holyoke College, I majored in Geology. My most transformative academic experience there, though, was participating in their Speaking, Arguing, and Writing mentor program. I was hired to be trained in peer academic mentoring. My task was to assist students with writing and oral presentation assignments across all disciplines, at any stage of the creation process (brainstorming, outlining, draft revision, fine tuning a final draft, etc). I learned how to collaborate with and guide my college student peers to success in all levels of writing and speaking assignments- a senior thesis, a mid term paper, a three minute long slides presentation, an application essay- any type of product for any course!
I have carried these skills with me throughout my entire career: I have taught thousands of students at the high school and college levels how to craft effective writing and speaking presentations. My Masters in Ecology and Evolution from Rutgers also focused on Science Communication. My skillset is not limited to communication skills, though. I'm eager to tutor in traditional life science and earth science content as well. I have taught these topics for 18 years at the high school and college level.
Scientific evidence supports that active recall is one of the best tutoring techniques. Some of my favorite ways to foster active recall are concept mapping, illustration, the Socratic Method, and of course fun! I used to struggle significantly with writing procrastination, so there is a special place in my heart for students who need an accountabilibuddy. My ultimate goal is to give you- the student- complete ownership of your product. I won't write the paper for you, or do your homework for you, rather I'll give you the tools and confidence to create on your own.
