Hello. My name is Ari and I am a Harvard-trained professor in ancient Jewish-Christian studies. In my previous life, I was a lawyer in Toronto, Canada. I have been tutoring students of all ages - children, teens, and adults- in learning to read and understand Hebrew, Jewish Studies, bar and bat mitzvah lessons, and in reading and writing (in English) for more than 25 years. I even successfully taught a person with autism for his bar mitzvah. My fluency in Hebrew comes from attending Jewish days schools, from receiving an exemption in Hebrew from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where I completed an MA in Jewish Studies taught in Hebrew. In addition to teaching in college settings, I have taught Hebrew school (grades 2, 3, 6, 6, and 7) in the classroom and have tutored kids of all ages one-on-one where they require extra help to keep up with the class. I even ran the Conservative Movement's Hebrew high school in Cincinnati for two years.
My approach to teaching varies by the student. When it comes to Jewish Studies I prefer teaching using a facilitator style where I present objects or videos that encourage student-led inquiry and critical thinking. However, I can also lead a traditional teacher-centered approach that is tempered by the needs and abilities of the students. Some people learn better orally, others visually. For this reason I assess the student's learning style and get to know the student's interests at our first meeting. I find many students resist studying what their parents want. If I can tailor the experience to their interests I get the best results.
I am available to teach in Manhattan, NY where I work and in northern New Jersey where I live.
