Hello! My name is Lea and I love all things teaching. I knew I wanted to be a teacher since 2nd grade and that passion never wavered. I graduated from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia with a GPA of 3.5 and a duel major in Elementary Education/Special Education. I am certified in Elementary K-5, Special Education K-12 and I have served as the school wide Literacy Coach within a program I created to provide support to students who were two or more levels below grade level. Although I have much experience teaching all subjects, my strengths lie in teaching the 5 fundamental literacy skills which are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension using an intervention plan tailored to meet your child where they are and then raise that bar a little bit higher and higher until they can independently reach it! My teaching motto has always been to teach in a way that ”tricks students into learning.” There are a multitude of fun and creative ways to introduce new concepts and skills to maximize student engagement, a teacher just needs to know which ones are effective to which students.
Whether a student has moved up a reading level or they are finally able to read that one tricky sight word, both are equally valuable and very rewarding in becoming a reader.
If your child is below reading level or on level but starting to struggle, it is usually caused by a lack of one or more of the 5 fundamental literacy skills that are the stepping stones in becoming an independent reader. The goal is for a student reach on level reading by 3rd grade. Research has shown the affect it can have in the trajectory of educational success if interventions are not implemented while the child is still in elementary school.
If your child is in K-4th grade and is reading below grade level, I would love to create and implement an individualized intervention plan to support and facilitate a productive tutoring experience aimed at improving reading skills, self confidence, and hopefully a love for reading
