Hi, I'm Chris! I graduated from East Stroudsburg University with a focus in English and Secondary Education. Afterwards, I received my Master's degree from Georgian Court College, with a focus in Education and Special Education. I'm currently in my 11th year of teaching high school English in New Jersey, and over the course of my time as an English teacher, I have taught every grade level (9th-12th) and level (special education, general education, Honors, AP). Currently, I'm in my 6th year of teaching AP Literature, and last year I was a reader for the AP Literature exam. Through my extensive and varied teaching experiences, I've been able to teach students of multiple ability levels, and content ranging from classic literature, poetry, college essay writing, and literary analysis.

While I have tutored students from my high school to help them prepare for SATs and the AP Lit exam, I've mostly focused on my classroom teaching. I'm happy to now have the opportunity to help others, besides my students, prepare for whatever goals they may have. My students would say that while I have a very relaxed demeanor, I hold my students to very high expectations. Whether working on a draft for a college essay, practicing AP Literature multiple choice questions, or practicing timed essays, I have consistently shown the ability to keep my students engaged, effectively communicate the material students need to learn, and provide strong feedback to help students develop moving forward. I believe we are all works in progress, and I'm relentless in my efforts to improve my students’ abilities.

While teaching, I have typically taught in the classroom setting with anywhere from 5-32 students in my class at any given time. With that said, I also excel in working with students on a 1-to-1 basis, as I regularly include writing conferences as part of my teaching practice. My goals as a tutor are to help you reach your specific goals, so please let me know what you're working towards, and I'd be happy to help!

Approved Subjects

Literature

Literature

Teaching literature has been a core part of my experience as a high school English teacher. I have taught a variety of genres (information texts, poetry, prose, drama) and texts (canon and modern). As a AP Literature teacher, I design my own curriculum that prepares students for the AP Literature exam.
Reading

Reading

Teaching students to closely read text of all sorts of genres is incredibly important to my success as an English teacher. In my AP Literature classes, students practice reading a variety of texts closely, guided by my instruction.
Writing

Writing

The teaching of writing has been an important aspect of my teaching practice. In AP Literature my students have consistent practice in thesis/claim development, selecting relevant and sufficient evidence, and providing commentary that explains the important of that evidence. Through consistent practice, I successfully prepare students for the timed FRQs on the AP Literature exam.
